Ariana shot him a glare, then coughed lightly and pretended not to see.
Lambert walked over after changing his clothes.
Just then, the cook brought in dinner, and Lambert gestured for her to place it on the coffee table. With a quiet acknowledgment, the cook set the dishes down and turned to leave.
"Make some century egg and congee tomorrow," Lambert instructed.
The cook paused, then nodded. "Yes, Sir."
After ensuring neither Lambert nor his wife needed anything else, she finally exited. Once the cook was gone, Ariana arched an eyebrow. "Why ask for that congee?" Neither she nor Lambert particularly liked it.
But their three sons adored it—so much so that they never seemed to tire of it.
Back at the main residence, three bowls of congee were prepared almost every other day. The old madam, worried the boys might grow sick of it, had insisted on spacing out the servings.
Lambert replied, "Kevin and Carson are coming tomorrow."
Ariana blinked in surprise.
He continued, "Carson’s been throwing a fit, demanding to see you. He’s turned the main house upside down." Truthfully, Lambert wasn’t one to indulge his children—little Lucian was proof enough of that.
And Lucian was his eldest son, the one he doted on the most. That alone spoke volumes about how the other two fared.
Originally, he hadn’t planned to bring the boys over, preferring the peace of just the two of them. But the old madam had called while he was driving, insisting they fetch the children tomorrow. Just as he frowned, ready to protest, she shut him down with a single remark.
The elderly lady said, "Do you want your two children to grow up as if they were orphans?"
Lambert fell silent.
She was right.
Ever since Kevin and Carson were born, he had barely spent any quality time with them. Most of the time, they were left in the care of the old lady. And although Ariana had been more involved in their upbringing, after the incident with Allison, she had been too overwhelmed to focus on them. All three children had been pushed to the back of their minds.
Recalling the distant, quiet looks in his two younger sons' eyes when he visited the Stone Family residence just two days ago, Lambert couldn’t bring himself to refuse.
She was right…
Things couldn’t continue like this.
When Ariana heard Lambert’s words, she froze for a moment. After collecting herself, she let out a sigh and forced a bitter smile. "Fine, go pick them up tomorrow."
It had only been a year after giving birth to Kevin and Carson when the incident with Allison happened, followed by another pregnancy.
Now that she thought about it, the last time she had seen Kevin and Carson was three days ago. She had been furious at Georgia for her favoritism and neglect during her own childhood.
But looking at herself now…
She was walking the exact same path as Georgia.
What difference was there between them?
The realization hit her like a wave, and Ariana exhaled deeply. She truly hadn’t been a responsible mother.
Lambert seemed to sense her thoughts. He handed her a bowl of porridge and said, "After this one, no more."
Ariana arched an eyebrow, narrowing her eyes at him before letting out a cold laugh. "Took you long enough to figure that out?"
Lambert rubbed his nose and didn’t dare say another word.
Ariana couldn't be bothered to engage with him further. Taking the porridge from his hands, she began sipping it slowly. Lambert watched her for a moment before blinking and saying, "Oh, there's something I haven't told you yet."
With a cold snort, she curled her lips. "Seems like you're quite the charmer."
Lambert scratched his head sheepishly. "Well, now you know."
Ariana: "..."
Lambert continued, "So you should treat me better. After all, there are way too many people out there eyeing your husband." He even sighed dramatically, as if burdened by the thought.
Ariana had the sudden urge to smack him on the head—and she did.
Lambert feigned pain with an exaggerated hiss.
Ariana smirked. "What, scared now?"
Suppressing a laugh, Lambert put on an obedient face. "Yeah, terrified."
She pinched his cheek lightly, then narrowed her eyes in mock warning. "Then you'd better behave. If I find out you've stepped out of line..." She left the threat hanging, but the implication was clear.
Lambert nodded solemnly. "Don’t worry, no one in this world has more self-control than your husband. So..." He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a husky whisper near her ear, "Does that mean we can be together tonight? I checked with the doctor—it’s safe now..."
Ariana’s face flushed instantly.
Lambert continued in that same low, velvety tone, "I’ll be gentle." The words sent another wave of heat to her cheeks.
She coughed awkwardly, tugging at her sleeve. "Uh... maybe we should wait until after the baby’s born..."
Lambert narrowed his eyes, his breath warm against her ear. "So you’re just going to let me starve?"
Ariana: "..."
