With such a major incident occurring, it was impossible for the Stone family to remain unaware.
Especially since it happened right when Old Mr. Stone was in the middle of a conversation with Lambert. The old man was well aware of the situation. Though he still didn’t hold much regard for this granddaughter-in-law, the child in Ariana’s belly was, after all, a Stone family heir—something he took very seriously. So once things stabilized the next day, he immediately sent people over.
Among them were Hugh and his wife.
Gilbert, as Ariana’s father, naturally had to come as well.
And, of course, Georgia was also present.
To outsiders, Georgia was still Ariana’s birth mother, and no one knew about the rift between them. Her absence would have raised eyebrows.
When Gilbert and Georgia arrived, the former paled at the sight of Hugh and his wife standing outside the hospital room. He hurried over and asked, "How is Ariana?" He had only just learned the news himself.
A fire—
How could there have been a fire?
This was a private hospital under the Stone family’s name, guarded like a fortress. How could something like this happen?
But now wasn’t the time to assign blame.
The priority was to find out what had happened to Ariana and his unborn grandchild!
Hugh looked at the visibly distressed Gilbert and sighed. "Don’t worry, she’s fine now. The situation is under control." At this point, Hugh still didn’t know that Lambert had already told the old man he wouldn’t divorce Ariana to marry Irene.
So as he faced his in-laws now, he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of guilt.
She risked her life to give birth to his son's child.
Yet before long, his son plans to divorce her and marry someone else.
Put yourself in their shoes—if he had a daughter married to such a man, he’d be furious. But he didn’t dare question his father’s decision, let alone control Lambert. All he could do was hope Lambert might reconsider after this.
Later, Hugh and Jolene led Gilbert and his wife to the incubator where the baby lay.
At that moment, the tiny infant slept soundly inside the incubator, her breaths faint and uneven, as if they might stop at any second. She was so fragile, so delicate, that even the slightest touch seemed dangerous. Much smaller than a typical newborn, the sight of her made Gilbert’s heart ache unbearably.
His voice came out hoarse. "The doctors said she’ll be alright, didn’t they?"
Jolene glanced at her husband, then at her in-laws, before shaking her head. "They said she’s out of immediate danger, but... she’s still too weak. We can’t be certain until she’s out of the incubator." She sighed softly. "Such a pity... It’s a little girl." Her own heart ached for the child.
This was her first granddaughter.
Just as expected, Gilbert’s expression twisted in pain at her words.
His face pale, he stared at the frail, sickly infant in the incubator, his chest tightening with grief.
Meanwhile, Georgia cast a complicated glance at the baby before quickly looking away. A strange unease settled in her chest, restless and unsettling. She didn’t understand where this sudden emotion came from, but an ominous premonition clung to her.
Something was about to happen.
That faint, warning sense of impending crisis left her nerves frayed, her patience thin—even for the child before her.
In the past,
Georgia would have felt a pang of sorrow and pity upon seeing such a child. After all, Ariana was the daughter she had raised with her own hands. Even though the girl had never acknowledged her as a mother and had repeatedly harmed her own flesh and blood, the child was innocent. Naturally, Georgia couldn’t bring herself to resent the little one.
