Since Aunt Kendra had put it that way, Bran couldn't very well refuse and agreed.
After Bran left, Kendra finally let the strained expression slip from her face. Exhaustion pooled in the depths of her eyes as she turned her head slightly toward Earl and said flatly, "I'm going to my room."
Seeing Kendra about to leave again, Earl quickly followed.
He gazed at her, his words deliberate. "Kendra, can you at least tell me how many days you'll be gone? When will you be back?"
Kendra replied, "I probably won't return for the next few days."
Earl nodded, then pressed cautiously, "But how many days exactly? Three? Four? Or a whole week?"
Kendra: "......"
Under her silent stare, Earl knew his persistence was problematic—it might push her further away. But he couldn't help himself. Anxiety gnawed at him. He was utterly lost, unable to grasp what had unsettled her so deeply.
If this were about Irene, she could easily rescue Irene if she wanted to. He wouldn't stop her. Even if he tried, Kendra had never feared obstacles—she always achieved what she set her mind to.
So that couldn't be the reason. But if it wasn't that, then what? Earl had no answers.
In all the years he'd known her, Kendra had rarely been this distracted. Her gaze drifted, as though her thoughts were miles away. It terrified him—this fear that she might vanish in the blink of an eye. He would give her anything: the Harper family's resources, her freedom, whatever she desired.
Anything at all.
Even after all these years of sleeping in separate rooms, he had never complained. He had kept his promise.
But the one thing he couldn't bear was the thought of Irene leaving.
Even though she had promised not to divorce him, Earl still felt uneasy. That was why he couldn't quite control his aggressive tone earlier.
Kendra studied him for a long moment before replying, "I don't know. Maybe."
Earl realized his attitude had been too harsh. He took a deep breath to steady himself, softening his tone as he asked, "Kendra, can you tell me if something happened?" Kendra had never kept anything from him all these years. Though she managed the company, every decision was made after discussion between them. There were no secrets between them.
Unless...
It was something personal.
The thought that there might be a private matter weighing on Kendra's mind made Earl's unease grow.
Kendra looked at him—his anxious eyes still holding a glimmer of hope—and nearly laughed. After all, they had been close friends for years, even college classmates. She knew Earl's temperament well. He was like a child sometimes. His current distress probably stemmed from fear that she might abandon the company.
That was exactly how his mind worked.
With a resigned sigh, Kendra forced a faint smile, though her voice carried a trace of bitterness. "My biological daughter... has been found."
There was no point hiding it from him. They had been friends for too long. Since he wanted to know, she told him.
Earl froze. "D-daughter?"
