In the end, Vincent went to the school himself.

Edith and Hallie rode together in the same car for the first time. An uncomfortable silence filled the vehicle, the air as cold

as ice.

The car sped down the road and quickly pulled up to Sunspire High School’s front gates. It was peak drop–off time, and the area was packed with students and parents, noisy and chaotic.

Hallie smoothed her hair and then stepped out. The second she appeared, a group of students paused to gawk.

“Look, it’s Hallie, the school beauty!”

“She’s gorgeous, totally the hottest girl in school. I’d love to get her number.”

“Hallie’s bald. She’s wearing a wig, and trust me, she’s super ugly.”

“I’ve seen her bald too. She looks way worse than an average person.”

Hallie’s smile instantly vanished. She clenched her fists, glaring furiously at Edith, who stood nearby looking completely

unfazed.

‘If it weren’t for this witch, no one would be calling me bald. She wrecked my reputation–I’ll make her pay for it,’ Hallie fumed silently.

“Edith, wait up,” she called, her voice sickly sweet. Then she hurried to catch up and grabbed Edith’s wrist.

Edith yanked her hand free, annoyed.

And just like that, Hallie stumbled backward, collapsing to the ground with a fit of coughs–everyone witnessed it.

“Hallie, you okay?” Noreen sprinted over, hauling Hallie up. She spun around, shooting daggers at Edith. “Hallie was just diagnosed with leukemia, you know? You’re her sister, yet instead of protecting her, you’re bullying her in front of everyone!

Instantly, murmurs erupted among the crowd.

“Oh my, Hallie has leukemia?”

“No wonder she’s bald and pale. That’s rough.”

“Poor Hallie. Her life is already so tough, and now her sister is treating her like this.”

“Edith, you have to apologize today.”

“Yeah, apologize!”

The troublemakers in the crowd started catcalling, egging it on.

Edith let out a sharp laugh. “I only apologize for things I actually did. Why would I say sorry for something I didn’t?” With that, she took a quick step forward.

A bad feeling suddenly washed over Hallic. She tried to step back, but it was too late.

Edith just extended one finger and lightly tapped Hallie’s shoulder. And suddenly, Hallie lost all control and fell backward.

“Wow, that’s some seriously bad acting Edith shook her head. “One little tap and you fall over? Are you made of glass or something?”

The whole thing played out clearly like slow motion. The students nearby caught every second of it and started buzzing

“I saw it. Edith barely touched Hallie–no force at all.

“Looks like Hallie staged that fall to frame Edith.”

“Wait, isn’t she supposed to be the sweet, innocent girl? When’d she get so sneaky?”

“Sneaky? More like a total drama queen. Half the guys in school have fallen for her tricks.”

“Ugh, I bet she’s even faking that whole leukemia thing.”

The sharp whispers hit Hallie like a wave, her chest heaving. ‘Fine, the first fall was faked. But that second time, that witch Edith pushed me!‘ she cursed to herself.

She opened her mouth to argue, but no words came out. Rage burned hotter inside her.

Edith, though, was feeling pretty good. In her previous life, she’d been through this a hundred times–innocent, but no one let her explain. Her name got dragged through the mud, over and over, by those same cheap tricks.

Without sparing Hallie another glance, she turned and walked straight into the school.

The crowd around them slowly scattered.

Hallie ground her teeth, so hard they felt like they might shatter. She’d never been humiliated this badly, and she was determined to make Edith pay for it.

“Edith’s a total bitch!” Noreen hissed. “You’re her sister, and she pulled that? My cousin’s useless; he couldn’t even lay a hand on Joseph. What’s our next move?”

Hallie’s fist tightened. Normally, if someone messed with her, she’d tell Karen, who would straighten it out.

When it came to Edith, however, Karen would just tell her to tough it out, saying things’d blow over in three months. But Hallie couldn’t even last three days, three hours, or even three minutes.

“Edith’s too tough to take on directly,” Hallie said, pressing her lips thin. “She’s just a brute who solves everything with her fists. But we’re smarter than that. Don’t let her bait us.”

Noreen’s eyes darted around, a mischievous glint forming. “What if I round up some rascals…”

allie shook her head. “She’s always at school or home–never alone. And beating her up won’t solve anything. It might give ter ammunition against us. We need to trash her name so bad she can’t stay here. That’s the only real payback.”

They kept plotting till the bell cut them off.

Edith dived into her usual study grind. Every time she opened a test paper, the System would instantly trigger a task. Once she finished a test, the System would reward her with cash–bigger scores, bigger money. Before long, her bank account crested ten grand.

After the last morning class, James walked up to the front of the classroom, carrying a stack of papers.

SATX coming up he announced “School’s throwing a stress–relief event for seniors. Every class has to put on at least one act Sign–ups start now–who’s in?

Tmmediately, all eyes uned to Hallie Everyone knew she’d aced her piano exams–Level 10. piles of awards, and die played at concerts all the time. Having her perform for their class was a no–brainer.

Norven spoke up Hallie just got some bad news about her health. Making her perform now would be really unfair Our new classmate Edith plays piano–why not give her the spot?”

Halle chimed in softly, “Edith, you’ve been playing since you were three. Teachers always said you were super talented. Why not do it for the class

Edith jotted down an equation on her test paper, and only then did she lift her head lazily. “Not going,” she drawled. Every minute telt too valuable to waste on some show.
