Chapter 28
Chapter 28
The streetlight cast a glow over Zachary’s flawless face. He shoved one hand in his pocket, looking cool and defiant. “That’s right. I never wanted to come back here.”
Dorm life was so much better. No one could tell him what to do. He could do whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted–or just do nothing at all.
Karen put on her best motherly look. “Zachary, your high school entrance exams are just around the corner. You can’t keep pulling stunts like this. I get that teenagers get all wrapped up in romance, but your grades have to be your priority right
now.”
“I didn’t fucking date anyone!” Zachary exploded. “If I did something. I’d own up to it. But if I didn’t do it, I’ll never admit it.”
The girl in his class had hit on him at least three times, and he’d shot her down every single time.
Gaming and hanging out with his buddies was awesome–he had zero interest in dating. But now, that girl had gotten him stuck moving back home.
Vincent’s face flushed red with anger. “Watch your mouth, Zachary. You think I don’t know what you’ve been up to at school
“Skipping class every other day, dragging classmates to internet cafes, cheating on tests, copying answers–and now you’re harassing some girl? You’re making our whole family look like a joke!”
Vincent wasn’t satisfied even after his tirade. Scanning the yard, he spotted a steel pipe on the ground. He bent down, snatched it up, and charged straight at Zachary.
Zachary didn’t flinch. He tilted his chin up, defiance burning in his eyes. “Hit me then–better kill me. See if that fixes your precious family reputation.”
Vincent was even more furious. He raised his hand and swung to strike Zachary.
“Vincent, stop,” Karen pleaded from the side. “Zachary’s going through a rebellious phase. The more you beat him, the more stubborn he’ll get. He might even run away. We need to take it slow. Zachary will come around.”
Her words were like throwing gasoline on a fire, only making Vincent more furious and his potential strike even more
vicious.
But the steel pipe was intercepted mid–swing. Edith gripped it firmly and tossed it to the ground.
She stood protectively in front of Zachary and said coolly, “Zachary’s current state is a failure of parental responsibility. Instead of taking out your anger on him, maybe you should examine yourself.”
Vincent’s face was ashen with rage. He was furious and consumed by guilt, his chest heaving with intense emotion.
“Dad, I believe Zachary will turn things around.” Edith’s voice softened. “Just give him some time, and he’ll definitely become amazing.”
Zachary couldn’t hold back his bitter laugh. “I’m just trash. Trash only gets better by being completely remade.”
His defeatist attitude reignited Vincent’s anger. He jabbed a finger right at Zachary’s face, practically shaking with rage.
“You’ve got three months until the high school entrance exam. Get in, and we’ll pay for it. If you don’t, pack your bags and go find a job. We don’t waste money on deadbeats,” Vincent said slowly, and then stormed into the house.
Zachary was fuming, too. If he were at the school dorm, he’d be chilling and gaming right now, not getting torn apart. He

gritted his teeth and stormed out of the yard.
It was past ten, and the villa complex’s paths were nearly deserted and dark. Zachary was just a fourteen–year–old kid- wandering alone at night wasn’t safe. Edith sighed and started after him
Hearing the footsteps on his tail, Zachary ran even faster, quickly disappearing down the tree–lined path.
Edith hurried to catch up, only to come face–to–face with a group of people.
System: [New mission: As a proper heiress, you must have a kind heart. Please help the neighbors find someone!
Edith looked up, first spotting Larry, then Stella, and the Larson family’s butler.
When she left the Lovett family years ago, she was still young. She remembered Stella as a stern, old–fashioned matriarch who always held Larry to sky–high standards.
Back then, she’d only dared to sneak into the Larson Residence to visit Larry. Her mother was still alive at that time–and even if Stella caught her, she wouldn’t scold her. Instead, she’d have the staff carefully escort her home.
Later, her mother died, and when she returned to Sunspire, her reputation was in ruins. Once, when Larry came to see her and Stella caught them, she immediately unleashed a brutal verbal attack.
With no mom to watch out for me, people can just walk all over me, Edith thought bitterly.
“Edith!” Larry spotted her, his face lighting up. “What are you doing out so late? Why aren’t you home resting?
Edith asked, “Are you guys looking for someone?”
Larry sighed, “Uncle Marcus suddenly disappeared. We have no idea where he went.”
“I’ll help,” Edith offered.
She then joined the Larson family’s search party. Everyone was so panicked that no one noticed the extra person–except
Stella.
She glanced at Edith, her expression neutral and distant. But she said nothing.
“Mr. Larson!” the servants shouted.
“Uncle Marcus!” Larry yelled, his voice echoing.
Edith knew Marcus was Larry’s uncle–fourth in line in the Larson family, just two years older than Larry.
She’d never met Marcus and had no clue what he looked like, but she joined the search anyway, calling out “Marcus” as they scoured the villa neighborhood and then moved outside.
About ten minutes later, the Larson family’s butler rushed up, excited. “Mrs. Stella Larson, we found Mr. Marcus Larson. He’s by the Willow Reservoir.”
Stella exhaled in relief. Dwight had brought Marcus to Sunspire for care, strictly instructing her to watch over him. Marcus had been here less than ten days and had gone missing twice. If word of this got back to Bonrea, Dwight would definitely
blame her.
“Station more people around him,” she said sharply. “Don’t let him slip away again.”
The butler nodded and hurried to arrange it.

“We found Uncle Marcus, Larry said to Edith. It’s too dangerous for a girl to be out here alone. Want me to walk you
home?”
“No thanks, I’ve got something to do. Edith waved him off, stepping back.
She watched as the Larson men closed in around the Willow Reservoir and grabbed a tall man. But the distance was too far, and the light was too dim–she couldn’t make out his face at all.
System: [Mission complete. A proper heiress naturally makes people like her. Reward: One box of candies that will make crying children instantly obedient.]
Edith fell silent. According to the usual pattern, shouldn’t the System tell me where Zachary is? What’s this random sugar reward about?‘ she thought, feeling confused.
A metal box had appeared in her pocket. She pulled it out–black with elegant gold lines, looking incredibly fancy.
She opened the box and found dozens of colorful candies that looked tasty. She wondered if the System was telling her to bribe Zachary home with them.
