Reborn, She's Back for Revenge novel Chapter 30

The dim streetlights cast long shadows as Marcus held Edith’s petite frame in his arms. Their silhouettes stretched across the

pavement.

Edith tried to push him away, but he only tightened his embrace, pulling her closer until she could barely breathe.

Her breath came in shallow gasps as she pried his fingers loose one by one, finally freeing herself enough to gulp fresh air.

Don’t leave meMarcus, this strikingly handsome manmature, welldressedsuddenly burst into tears.

Edith had never seen a grown man cry like thishis strong frame shaking with sobs, his eyes turning red as fat tears rolled down his cheeks, splattering onto his expensive tailored suit.

Quickly, she fished a candy from her pocket and pressed it into his mouth.

Like magic, the tears stopped instantly. A bright smile spread across his face as he exclaimed, So sweet! This is the best candy I’ve ever tasted.

Seeing he’d finally stopped crying, Edith exhaled in relief. Do you remember your parentsphone number?she asked gently. I can call them to come get you.

I don’t have parents,” he sniffled, his eyes glistening. Just mean people who call me stupid and push me around. Pleasecan’t I stay with you instead? His fingers twisted nervously in his sleeves.

Edith’s mouth tightened. Taking in stray men wasn’t part of her life plan.

When he refused to give an address, insisting his family tormented him daily, Edith felt her resolve cracking.

Returning him felt like throwing a lamb to the wolves. But her studio apartment barely fit her yoga mat, let alone a full-

grown man.

I’m so tired. His sudden yawn interrupted them as he slumped against Edith, his deadweight steering them both onto a park bench.

He sprawled lazily across the chair, his head resting on Edith’s lap as he closed his eyes and slipped into sleep.

His tall frame was folded into an awkward positionlegs stretched straight to the pavement, body twisted at an odd angle. Yet somehow, he dozed off, his soft snores barely audible.

Edith pulled out her phone and called the police.

Yes, hello?she said quietly. I’ve found what appears to be a missing adult male. He looks to be in his early twenties, but his behavior suggests some kind of developmental

Her words trailed off as she felt the unmistakable prickle of being watched. She scanned the place before her gaze dropped downward and locked with the man’s suddenly alert, icecold eyes.

In one fluid motion, he pushed himself upright, looming over her where she sat. When he spoke, his voice carried a dangerous edge. Who are you?

The moment she recognized the change in his voice, Edith knew he was back to normal. So his mind is finejust prone to occasional lapses? she wondered.

She rose to her feet, smoothing her clothes with automatic gestures. If you remember where you live now, you should go.she said, her tone carefully neutral.

Chapter 30

As she turned to leave, a pinsandneedles sensation shot through her legsthey’d gone numb from being his pillow all this

time.

Marcus stood watching until Edith’s figure vanished around the corner. He absently licked his lips, the lingering sweetness reminding him that someone had slipped him candy during his episode again.

But this time, the flavor was different. He frowned, trying to place the unfamiliar taste as he turned toward the gated community and began walking home.

The grand Larson residence was in chaos. At least twenty servants and security guards scurried across the manicured lawns in a panic. They’d turned the entire gated community upside down searching for Marcus, but he was nowhere to be found.

When his condition flared up, Marcus regressed to the mental state of a fiveyearold. The staff knew if anything happened to him while he was in this vulnerable state, they’d all lose their jobs at a minimum.

Just as despair set in, the massive front door creaked open.

Mr. Larson! The butler’s voice cracked with relief. Thank God you’re safe

Larry hurried forward. Assuming his uncle was midepisode, he took Marcus’s hand and cooed, Dodo, I’ve got brand new toys for you. Let’s go play, okay?

Marcus’s icy stare froze him in place. Let go.

Larry’s breath caught. Uncle Marcus, yyou’re yourself again?

Larry could hardly believe it. Marcus’s episodes usually lasted a solid twenty hours. But today, he’d snapped out of it in less than an hour without any treatment at all.

Stella exhaled, some tension leaving her shoulders. Thank God. Marcus, call your grandparents immediately. You know how they worry until they hear your voice.

With a brief nod, Marcus headed upstairs. He bypassed the phone entirely, making straight for the leatherbound notebook. in his desk drawer.

From his suit pocket came his trusty fountain pen, black enamel with gold accents. Years of use had polished the grip to a smooth patina, yet it wrote as crisply as the day he’d gotten it.

Marcus’s expression darkened as he opened the notebook. The trend was alarmingyearly episodes in childhood, then every six months as he grew older. By his teens, they struck every few months. Recently, he’d had two attacks in just seventy- two hours.

The episodes were getting worse. Each time his alternate personality took over, it stayed longer, chipping away at his control day by day.

But this time, something was different. He drew a firm circle on the paperforty minutes from onset to recovery, his shortest episode so far.

Kane. His voice cut through the silence.

Right on cue, Kane emerged from the shadows, the black trench coat making him nearly invisible in the dim light.

I want a full report, Marcus said. Every person I encountered. Every action. No detail overlooked.”

Yes, sir.Kane gave a curt nod before vanishing into the night.
