"What?" Sean asked, shocked.
The police officer's words hit him like a bolt of lightning. He froze on the spot.
"That's impossible. Absolutely impossible!" His voice rose as his composure cracked. "I didn't do it! Someone's setting me up!"
The police officers ignored his protest. The senior officer only lifted a hand in a polite but firm gesture. "Whatever you've got to say, you can say it at the station."
Nurses and patients were already peeking out from doorways along the corridor, whispering to one another and pointing in their direction.
Sean had never suffered this kind of humiliation.
But with the police right there, he couldn't push back at all.
Under dozens of watchful eyes, Jynston General Hospital's youngest and most promising Heartwright was led out of the building by police officers, looking as shaken and disheveled as any suspect.
Annie stayed where she was for a moment, then turned and walked back toward Cecilia's room.
The door was still slightly ajar. Annie lifted a hand and gently pushed the door open.
Inside, Cecilia was curled up on the bed. Her body shook so hard that the blankets trembled with her.
She had clearly heard the raised voices in the hallway. She knew that Sean had been taken away.
She wondered how the police had managed to trace it back to Sean that quickly. She had thought that the plan was foolproof. Besides, Lillian took the money.
Yet, the police had still come, and they had gone straight to Sean.
Annie slowly walked to the bedside and looked down at Cecilia from above. There was a hint of something complex in her eyes, a trace that almost resembled pity.
"I've never met someone as stupid as you before," Annie calmly said. "You didn't manage to hurt me at all, but you sent your backer straight to the police station. You're really something."
Cecilia's head jerked up. "It was you! You called the police! Annie, you bitch!"
Annie almost laughed at how exasperated Cecilia looked. Her gaze swept around the expensive private ward.
"Sean's been taken away by the police. So, who's paying for this ward now? Who’s paying for your treatment and chemotherapy? Without Sean footing the bill, how long do you think you can survive?"
