Rejected by my Husband novel Chapter 10

Karline’s POV

That night, I couldn’t take it anymore. The silence. The distance. The unanswered questions that ate at me like fire.

I heard the front door click open past ten, his familiar footsteps echoing through the hallway. My heart raced as I stood from the couch, the sonogram reports clutched tightly in my hand.

“Reid,” I called softly.

He stopped, turning his head slightly. His face was unreadable, shadowed by exhaustion.

I took a step closer, my throat tight. “I went to the doctor today. For a checkup.”

His eyes flickered, the faintest shift in his expression. I quickly held out the papers, my hands trembling. “These are the reports. Everything is fine. The baby is healthy.”

For a long moment, he didn’t move. Just stared at me, at the reports I was holding out like some fragile offering. Then, slowly, he reached for them. His fingers brushed mine—brief, cold, but real.

He looked down at the papers in silence, his lips pressed into a thin line. I searched his face desperately for something, anger, relief, anything, but his expression stayed flat.

Finally, his voice came. Low. Measured. Almost detached.

“Take care of yourself. And the baby.”

It wasn’t warm. It wasn’t what I wanted to hear. But the words still pierced through me like sunlight breaking through a storm. My chest tightened, tears filling my eyes.

“Yes,” I whispered, nodding quickly. “I will. I promise.”

He folded the reports carefully, tucked them under his arm, and turned away. His footsteps carried him down the hall, the door to the guest room clicking shut behind him.

I stood there alone in the quiet, the echo of his words replaying in my head.

Take care of yourself. And the baby.

It wasn’t forgiveness. It wasn’t love. But it was something.

I touched my stomach, a small smile tugging at my lips despite the tears still clinging to my cheeks.

“Maybe…” I whispered to myself. “Maybe there’s still a chance. For us. For our family.”

For the first time in weeks, a fragile hope stirred in me. And I held onto it with everything I had.
