Shattered by the Alpha Stronger Than Ever novel Chapter 131

Chapter18

The bitter taste of irony was almost too much to bear. I felt a maniacal laugh building up inside me, a laugh that mocked the cruel hand

of karma and one that I couldn’t express. 1 had once callously discarded Karissa, giving her only a fraction of the love and devotion she deserved, all because I was too tangled up in my head. And now, the universe was serving me a twisted form of justice, forcing me to witness the woman 1 still loved slipping into the arms of the one man I’d always feared would take her from me.

Just as the air was thickening with unspoken emotions, my sister burst into the room. I winced inwardly, bracing myself for the impending storm, knowing that her arrival would only add to the chaos and sensitivity that already filled the space.

How dare you show up here?she spat, her eyes blazing with accusation. Are you here to see if he’s dead or alive? Must’ve made you happy hearing about it, isn’t it?Karissa’s face tell, her eyes widening in hurt as she took a step back, clearly taken aback by my sister’s

vicious attack

Karissa’s eyes flashed with anger, and her voice took on a sharp edge. Listen here, Margaret, if you don’t have something good to say, keep your mouth shut, she snapped.

Your brother just came out of a lifethreatening surgery, this isn’t the time to play bitchy batty. My sister looked taken aback, her eyes widening in shock. She was clearly not used to being spoken to like that, especially not by Karissa, who had always maintained a polite distance from her. But I was glad to see Karissa standing up to my sister, who had been behaving dumbly resenting. My sister deserved to be called out, and I was grateful that Karissa had done just that.

I am here to meet Keith, nothing more, nothing less, she sighed as she turned to me, her shoulders sagging slightly.

My sister’s words poured out like a choked sink blasting.

Why?she demanded, her voice rising. Are you his fiancée? Are you his wife or girlfriend? You left him, remember? Without even thinking to give it a second chance. Yes, he cheated, but he didn’t sit down and plan it out to hurt you, it was a mistake, a momentary lapse, that’s all. And what about all the years he’s loved you, devoted himself to you? Doesn’t that count for anything? Karissa’s eyes flashed with anger, her gaze locked on my sister as she absorbed the verbal onslaught, her face pale and tense.

I forced out the words, my voice hoarse and strained, as I begged my sister to leave. Leleave, Maggi, plplease,I implored, my throat constricting with the effort.

Maggie’s eyes widened in a disbelieving stare, as if she couldn’t fathom why I’d want her to stop defending me. But then, her face hardened, and she gritted her teeth, her jaw clenched in frustration. With a final, withering glance at Karissa, she spun on her heel and walked out, leaving behind a tense, but comfortable silence.

I offered a weak apology, feeling a pang of regret for my sister’s outburst, I’m sorry, about her,Karissa’s head was still cast down, her eyes fixed on the flour as she struggled to maintain her composure. I could see the tension in her lips, the way they were pursed in a determined effort to hold back the tears.

Her footsteps were hesitant as she drew closer, my heart yearned for her to sit beside me, to feel her warmth and comfort, but my mind knew better I had forfeited that right long ago. She raised her head, her eyes locking onto mine, and I was struck by the tears that shone in those blue eyes.

II’ve never wished for something like this to happen to you,she whispered, her gaze never wavering from mine. Despite the sorrow etched on her face, she lookeddifferent, somehow. Better, even, than the last time I’d seen her

I muttered a barely audible I know, but Karissa’s ears picked up on it, and she let out a soft sigh. Her hands began to fidget, her fingers intertwining and separating in a restless dance. It was a telltale sign that she wanted to say something more, but was hesitant to broach the subject.

I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness. We’d once been so in sync, our conversations flowing effortlessly. But now, it seemed like we’d become strangers, unable to hold even the simplest of conversations without it feeling forced or awkward,

Karissa shifted on her feet, her eyes darting around the room before she spotted the high stool in the corner. She walked over to it, her movements precise, and grasped the stool’s backrest, pulling it closer to my bedside.

As she sat down, the stool creaked softly, and she settled in, her gaze drifting back to mine. I felt a pang of longing, a desperate urge to reach out and take her hand, to beg her to touch me one last time.
