Chapterug
“You didn’t have to cover my medical expenses,” she says and I could read the independent doubt that made her say that.
“It was my baby too, Karissa,” I choked out, the words tumbling from my lied breath. My eyes burned with unshed tears,
in a
the sting of grief and regret.
Karissa’s gaze lifted, her eyes locking onto mine, and for a moment, her mask of compostire slipped. A single tear escaped, rolling down her check like a tiny, glistening confession, and I felt my heart shatter anew at the sight of her pain.
“I know, and I’m so sorry I pushed you away that time,” she stammered, her words tumbling out in a halting, anguished filled confession. “But–but… I couldn’t grieve with you, I was such a mess…” Her voice cracked, the words dissolving into a whispered confession. I nodded slightly, wincing as the movement pulled at my tender skin.
I shifted my right hand, inching it across the bed until my fingers brushed against hers, where they rested on the corner of the mattress. I tapped my hand gently against her finger. “It’s okay,” I assured her, my voice was low and rough with emotion. “I’m the
one who broke us.”
Because I was the one who had shattered her trust, who had callously taken her love for granted. I was the one who had succumbed to temptation, surrendering to a moment of weakness that had left an indelible scar. The memories of that fateful night still scared my Jconscience the night I had betrayed her, just days before we were to exchange our vows..
She nodded, her expression slowly recomposing as she took in the extent of my injuries. Her gaze swept across my swollen face, her lips pursed in a tight, worried line. I knew that the sight of me like this – bruised, swollen, and broken–was a disturbing one, and I could sense her struggle to maintain her composure.
“How did this happen?” she asked, her voice tinged with a forced casualness, as if she were attempting to steer the conversation towards safer, more basic waters, away from the depths of our shared pain.
“I was thinking about you,” I admitted, the words tumbling out with a raw honesty that left me feeling exposed. I hadn’t intended to burden her with the weight of my distraction, but I couldn’t bring myself to lie, not when the truth was already etched so starkly. “Got distracted,” I added.
“Oh my god,” she whispered, as she exhaled a deep, shuddering sigh. She lifted her gaze to the ceiling, her eyes blinking rapidly as she fought to hold back tears. But as she finally looked down at me, her composure shattered, and she burst into a sorrowful cry.
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to freak you out, but your condition is… It’s bad, Keith, truly bad,” she sobbed, her words dissolving into a whimper as she surrender to the overwhelming emotion
My own pain receded into the background, eclipsed by the anguish that radiated from Karissa. Even if her tears were born of pity rather than love, they still managed to awaken a spark within me, a spark that ignited a long–dormant ache in my chest. My heart, that had turned numb and lifeless, now stirred, its rhythmic beats synchronized with her sobs, as if it too were crying, finding its voice, and drawing its first ragged breaths in what felt like an eternity.
“I’ll be fine, Doll, “I soothed. A gentle whisper as I tapped her hand again with my less injured but bandaged one. Despite the physical barrier, I could sense her tension, her fragile emotional state, and I yearned to offer more comfort, more reassurance, but for now, I could only try to calm her with my words
Karissa’s eyes, puffy and tear–stained, met mine with a defeated expression, as if the turmoil inside her had reached a boiling point. She wiped her tears away with both hands, her movements mechanical, and I could almost see the chaos swirling in her mind. I knew that look, that feeling – it was the same disorienting sense of emotional upheaval that often engulfed her when she was overwhelmed by sadness or anger, especially after interactions with her father.
Her father, the man who had shattered her family with his infidelity, and then had the audacity to down play the severity of his actions. My heart swelled with shame as I realized that I had joined the ranks of those who had hurt her, that I had become a source of pain for the person I loved most.
“Dexter and Xaviera are here too,” she said, her voice a little masked, as if she had rummaged through her mind and come up empty, or perhaps it was just my own addled brain that made it seem that way.
“They are?” I asked, a spark of surprise and cautious happiness igniting within me, as I had assumed that my actions had irreparably
