My betrayal, the pain and hurt that I had caused her, made it unlikely that she would want to be close to me, to touch me. And who could blame her?
“Goodbye, Keith,” she says her voice soft and gentle, as she reached into her bag and pulled out a book. I recognized the title instantly, it was the same book she had told me about, the one that had helped her cope with the pain of her father’s infidelity and her mother’s passing
She keeps it on the bedside table, and I felt overwhelmed as I realized what she was doing. “I wish you a speedy recovery,” she continued, “and a happy life.” The words were a blessing, a benediction, and I felt immense gratitude towards her, for being so selfless, so land.
“Thank you,” I whispered gratefully. “I wish you happiness too,” and a life that I couldn’t give you. She didn’t reply to that and simply plodded out.
As Dexter and Xaviera walked into the hospital room, I could sense a blending emotions emanating from them. Dexter’s expression was etched with concern, his eyes scanning my injured body with a deep–seated empathy. He seemed to be genuinely affected by my condition, and I felt a sense of gratitude towards him. Our friendship had been strained lately, but in this moment, it felt like old times
Xaviera, on the other hand, seemed more hesitant, her eyes darting back and forth between Dexter and me. She looked uncertain, like she wasn’t sure how to react or whether to sympathize with me, but she seemed to be making an effort, and I noticed her eyes soften slightly as she took in my condition. She had assured me that once I was allowed solids she’ll send me tood. I was grateful that they were there for me, even if things were complicated between us.
As soon as Dexter and Xaviera, the doctors did their usual routine check up for the day and departed, as soon as they did my sister pounced on me again.
“I still can’t believe they had the nerve to show up here,” she scoffed, her resentment visible. I let out a weary sigh. It was clear that she was still seething about Dexter and Xaviera’s visit, and I knew that I was in for another lecture.
“Maggi, it’s them who should be resenting, that would be quite understandable, not you,” I said, trying to reason with her, but she glared at me.
I let out a slow breath, feeling my body relax into the mattress, and let the darkness wash over me.
“By the way, what about your medical bill?” she asked, her brow furrowed with concern. “Maybe we should sell mom and dad’s place,”
GoodShort
she suggested, her voice matter–of–fact. I narrowed my eyes at her, feeling irritation irked me..
“Insurance covers most of it, and I have savings,” 1 objected politely, trying to keep my tone neutral. But to be honest, I was thinking that I wish she hadn’t flown down here. I would have been just fine on my own. My work buddies Caleb and Toby had already offered to help me out if I needed it, and I knew I could count on them. I didn’t need my sister’s help, and her presence was starting to feel more
like a burden than a blessing.
“But there’s no reason to keep it anyway, right? We have to sell it sometime, why not now, and have our equal shares?” she advised
