At his patronizing tone she pursed her lips, “would you like me going through your phone and texts and seeing your personal information?”

“I have no secrets from you Alcee.” He pulled his phone out of his pocket. “It unlocks with my fingerprint, but the password is the date of the night we spent together. You can go through my phone any time you like, and I only have the one.”

“Torq, you’re a billionaire with huge business ventures which are likely highly confidential,” she worked for a security firm. She knew the risk of him passing her his password.

“Alcee, I sleep next to you at night. You more than anyone could cause me more damage than anyone else. You could easily slit my throat and be Jdone with it. I sleep pretty heavy,” he stroked her cheek, “there is nothing in my life you are not welcome to look into.”

She shook her head in disbelief, “I’d never be able to slit your throat.”

“No!”

“Think of the mess it would make and then I’d have to clean it.”

He tickled her ribs and pulled her in for a hug. “Are you okay?”

“I guess.”

“It must be scary to know your father ordered your brother to kill our sun.

“He’s lost his mind. I feel bad for my mother.”

“Your brother made a comment about you making your own choices, but she is making hers, Alcee. She didn’t need to stay with him when he threw you out. She could have made a different choice. She stayed.

“True. It’s not the first time he’s said it to me. The night you and I first met, he called me and said he was visiting Mom that evening, and she was unwell and asking if he’d heard from me and I commented she is the one who chose to lose my number, and he said I made my choices.”

“He’s an ass.”

“He would probably say the same of you,” she snorted.

“It is clear he was not trained the same way I was in terms of running a family. The fact he let me know the deli is a front for operations for him and his brothers is a huge no–no. Perhaps he trusts me because you do but there isn’t a chance in hell I’d ever tell a rival family about my business. When I was going after Corrado for his ring two people knew and they are both in the room out here.”

“Tito and Bastiano?”

“Yes.”

“Your brother was surprised when I said I wanted us to be married by the end of this week. We’ll do it with a lawyer so it’s legal, but I would very much, when all this shit is sorted for us to have a real wedding in the church,”

“I would. I want to say our vows in front of God.”

She felt the emotion in her chest at the notion and felt the need to tease him. “Can I say I haven’t been proposed to? You’re telling me we’re getting married, but nobody asked me, and I don’t see a ring on my finger where I accepted a proposal”

“You want a ring?” he grinned wolfishly at her and reached into the top drawer of his desk and pulled out a little velvet box. “I mean I was going to wait until dinner tonight when everyone was there. Mom said she’d make a big dinner so we can all be there but,” he flipped the lid on the box and pulled out an emerald surrounded by diamonds and held it up in the light, “I’m happy to oblige you right now.”

She was terribly confused as she regarded him with a frown. “No. Wail What is happening?”

“Alcer Fina Mariani, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife and making you, me and Antero a real and true family joined together in holy matrimony?”

“This is a ring.”

“It is. It was my grandmother’s ring, I asked Cicciu to bring it with him when he came.”

“You have your grandmother’s ring here.”

“Yes.”

“You’re asking me to marry you?”

She felt her voice hitch as she wiped a t

tear off her cheek, “you were going to propose in front of my friends at dinner tonight?”

“It was my intention, but I can’t lie and say this thing hasn’t been burning a hole in my pocket since yesterday. I’ve been dying to put it on your hand. I’ve snuck into this office to look at it too many times to count.”

“You really want to marry me?”

“Hell yes, I want to marry you. I want to be your husband. I want to give you the life you deserve with the family you deserve and protect you the way you deserve. What do you say? Marry me?”
