Sabrina watched as a blur of students rushed past her, their footsteps a whirlwind of motion. She, however, took her time, making her way steadily toward the senior homeroom.
She hadn’t even reached the stairs when someone breezed past her, then doubled back with an easy swagger and called out, “Hey there! What year are you in?”
Sabrina glanced up, her gaze sweeping over a figure in a bright red hoodie. The boy’s grin was open and friendly, almost disarmingly so.
“Senior homeroom one,” she answered honestly.
He looked surprised, giving her a quick once-over. “Really? You’re in homeroom one? I know everyone in that class, but I haven’t seen you before. Are you new?”
Sabrina couldn’t be bothered to respond. This guy was a chatterbox—reminded her a bit too much of Bryce, with his relentless friendliness. She turned and started up the stairs, ignoring him.
But he just kept talking to himself, “Well, what do you know, I’m in homeroom one too. But I was away last year—spent it at Petersburg International. Skipped all of junior year. So, you transferred in last year?”
Sabrina gave a small nod but didn’t say anything. She hadn’t met him before, but she’d already guessed who he was.
Frank Chase, straight out of Crowncrest City. The Chase family was one of the city’s big four. It wouldn’t surprise her if he and Bryce knew each other.
It was her first time seeing Frank in person.
“Ah, that explains it! No wonder I didn’t recognize you. Look at that, what a coincidence—we’re both late, both classmates. Guess I should introduce myself. I’m Frank. Nice to meet you.”
Truth was, Frank hadn’t even wanted to come to school today. But his family was liable to check up on him, so after wrestling with himself in bed for a while, he dragged himself in. School wasn’t his thing, but his family insisted. At least being late gave him an excuse. And meeting a new classmate was as good a distraction as any.
“Sabrina,” she replied, her tone cool and detached.
