Chapter 1158
Sharon realized she might have overreacted just now.
“…It’s nothing,” she murmured.
She knew Thomas hadn’t meant anything inappropriate, yet she still wasn’t used to such close physical contact with a man.
Thomas didn’t press her. He simply reached out and touched her forehead. Her skin was still warm–feverish- but it had dropped considerably since the night before. Still, the fever hadn’t fully subsided; she would need at least another day of rest.
Her voice, though no longer hoarse, remained frail and weak.
“Has my fever gone down?”
“Not yet,” Thomas replied quietly.
Sharon paused. “Did you call anyone to come look for us?”
“My phone got lost while we were escaping.” He glanced at her. “What about yours? Gone too?”
Sharon nodded with a sigh. “This forest is huge. If we try to walk out, it could take days.”
And right now, she could barely stand. Whether they could leave–and when–was uncertain. If Thomas chose to abandon her, he could easily find his way out alone.
“Don’t worry,” he said, calm and certain. “I’ll find a way.”
“When do you think we can leave?”
“That depends on when your fever breaks.”
She looked toward the mouth of the cave, hesitating, “This afternoon, maybe?”
Thomas’s dark eyes reflected her faint silhouette.
“Is there someone or something–outside you’re so anxious to return to?”
“No,” Sharon said softly. “I’m just worried those assassins might still be around. In my condition, I’d only slow you down if they found us.”
Even though she had been missing for a full day and night, she knew the Kalen family wouldn’t be looking for her. She wanted to leave as soon as possible, but her body refused to cooperate.
Outside, the sky remained gray, heavy with the threat of rain. Her mind was still foggy, her energy all but drained.
Seeing her struggle to stay awake, Thomas said, “Get some rest. I’ll go gather dry firewood nearby.”
Sharon forced her heavy eyes open. “We’re… spending another night here?”

“With your condition, I doubt you can travel today.”
She exhaled, gullt flickering in her eyes. “I’m sorry… for slowing you down.”
Thomas gazed at her quietly.

“Sharon, this is my job. I’m a bodyguard–It’s what I’m paid to do. If it weren’t me by your side, it would’ve been another bodyguard. Saving you, protecting you It’s my duty.
“You hired me to keep you safe, and you’re paying millions a year for that. Otherwise, what would you be buying -a decorative omament?”
A faint smile tugged at his lips as he continued, “I remember you once said, ‘I can choose not to help, but once I decide to, I’ll never expect anything in return.”
