Sharon stared into the dark of the night and dialed another number.
The call connected quickly. On the other end came Melanie’s delighted voice.
“Sharon! You’re done with work already? That’s great! Tomorrow I’ll take you around Yuicuador–oh, where are you right now? I’ll come pick you up. You hardly ever visit, so we’ve got to make the most of the nightlife!”
Melanie lived in Yulcuador. After graduating, she had spent some time working in Marcentine before her family
called her back
Sharon, Ginny, Carol, and Melanie didn’t see each other often, but they kept in touch through messages–and through a small private chat group they all shared.
When Melanie found out Sharon was coming to Yulcuador on business, she was thrilled, insisting that once work was done, they had to meet up.
It had been ages since the two last saw each other, and Sharon had readily agreed.
But after what had just happened, a reunion was out of the question.
She spoke briefly. “Melanie, I’m sorry. I’ve gotten myself into trouble with the Noel family. I don’t think we’ll be able to meet.”
There was a sharp pause on the line.
“Sharon, what happened? How did you offend them?”
“Chuggs Noel barged into my room,” Sharon said. “I… might have hit him too hard.”
Melanie knew exactly what kind of person Chuggs was. The recent citywide lockdown flashed through her mind, and she understood without asking further.
She replied, “Sharon, the Noels hold enormous power here. With the city under lockdown, leaving Yuicuador won’t be easy anytime soon. Why don’t you come hide at my place? My family still carries some weight here. They wouldn’t dare search us.”
Sharon immediately refused.
“Melanie, I appreciate it, but I can’t. If I go to you, I might bring disaster to your doorstep.”
That made Melanie go still. “It’s that serious?”
“Yes,” Sharon said. “I don’t know Yuicuador well. Do you know anywhere I could hide–somewhere they won’t think to look?”
She had already made up her mind. The only choice now was to lay low and wait for help to arrive.
Melanie hesitated, then said, “I know a few places–crowded districts where people come and go. It’d be hard for them to search thoroughly. But…”
She faltered before finishing, “The living conditions aren’t good.”

“That’s fine,” Sharon said. “I only need somewhere temporary. Once things calm down, I’ll leave.”
“Alright. I’ll send you the address.”
“Melanie, thank you.”
“Don’t thank me,” Melanie said softly, guilt threading her voice. “I’m barely helping. But Sharon–if you need anything, promise me you’ll call. Don’t try to handle it alone.”
“I won’t,” Sharon replied. Then she ended the call.
She opened her map and searched for the address Melanie had sent.
