The damp chill in the air clung to Sharon’s skin, seeping Into her bones. It made her deeply uncomfortable.
After a while, the innkeeper–who had been arguing loudly on the phone–finally hung up. With a toothpick between her lips, she gave Sharon and Thomas a long, deliberate look.
“Looking for a room?” she asked.
Sharon nodded. “We’ll take two.”
The woman’s tone was flat. “Two rooms. Two hundred total.”
“Alright.”
“IDs,” the woman said. “I need to register you.”
Sharon hesitated. “We… accidentally lost our IDs. Is there any way you could make an exception?”
The woman’s eyelids lifted slightly. She looked them over again, then let out a dry little laugh. “In that case, four hundred for the room, four hundred deposit. Eight hundred total.”
Sharon didn’t argue. She just nodded. “Fine.”
After the payment, the woman grabbed a key and led them up the stairs to the third floor.
She unlocked a door and flicked on the light. “This is your room.”
It was small–barely thirty square meters with one double bed. Cramped, but decently kept. Clean enough.
Sharon frowned. “We asked for two rooms.”
SH
“Only this one left,” the woman replied coolly.
“But we passed several empty rooms on the way…”
Those doors had been left open for ventilation, clearly unoccupied.
“They’re all reserved,” the woman said curtly.
Sharon opened her mouth to speak, but the innkeeper cut her off. “You don’t even have IDs. You should be grateful I’m letting you stay at all. I could get fined for this. Try another place if you want–you won’t find anyone else who’ll take you.”
She’d run this inn for years; nothing surprised her anymore.
These two–too composed, too polished–clearly weren’t ordinary travelers. Probably a pair of rich runaways pretending to book separate rooms, though they’d end up together before the night was over. No need to waste another clean room on them. One room would do just fine.
Sharon understood. At a time like this, a roof over their head was already a blessing. She took a deep breath.” Alright. One room, then.”

Outside, the rain intensified–fat drops hammering against the windowpane. It wasn’t realistic to search for another place now, not in this weather, not when it risked drawing attention.
