Chapter 875
Carter’s words echoed exactly what Victoria had said.
So it was true-the attack had been meant for Johanna.
Sharon frowned. “But what grudge could Kelly possibly have against Johanna?”
She had no idea the two women had once been locked in a vicious rivalry over Thomas.
Carter replied, “I’m not entirely sure. But Johanna and Victoria once went to visit Kelly in prison. They even arranged her release on bail. Perhaps they struck some deal that later turned sour.”
Sharon studied him. “Lex said every surveillance camera along the route was destroyed, that nothing could be recovered. So how did you get these videos?”
Carter’s gaze darkened. “This is Amstern City. Nothing here stays hidden from me for long. Besides, Nate was the one who destroyed the footage, and he used my network to do it. He could conceal it from Lex and the others, but not from my people.”
Realization flickered across Sharon’s face. So Nate had helped cover Kelly’s tracks—that explained it.
And yet…
A faintly mocking curve touched her lips. Carter could uncover surveillance footage hidden by others, but he had failed to see through Kelly’s years-long deception, even when she had openly framed Sharon right under his nose.
Catching the derision in her eyes, Carter seemed to understand exactly what she was thinking.
“Sharon,” he said, “I’ve thought about it carefully. Kelly couldn’t have faked her illness alone. Someone must have been helping her, laying the groundwork long in advance. That’s why I never detected it…”
He paused, then admitted, “…and yes, it was my mistake. I trusted her too much.”
“So,” she asked coolly, “what do you plan to do?”
“That’s why I came,” Carter said. “I want to hear your thoughts. If you’d rather hand Kelly over to the Kalen family, I can claim I found the culprit through my own investigation. If you’d prefer not to get involved, I’ll pretend I know nothing. As for Kelly…
“I’m tracking her down. She’s not with Nate anymore. But rest assured, Sharon, I won’t let her hurt you again.”
Sharon had no intention of shouldering Kelly’s sins. The Kalen family already suspected her of being the one behind the attack on Victoria. Kelly, whom she disliked to begin with, wasn’t worth protecting.
“Give me the surveillance footage and your leads,” she said. “I’ll take them to the Kalen family myself. Kelly and I are already enemies. It doesn’t matter if I’m the one to expose her. No need for you to play the villain on my behalf.”
Then another thought struck her.
“Oh, and one more thing,” she added. “You said you were framed for messing with Thomas’s car and that smear campaign. It’s been ages. What have you actually found out?”
