There was nothing to pick up.
The head nurse could only hand her a hospital brochure. “This is for you,” she said. “It’s for all the patients.”
Marguerite glanced at it—a promotional booklet for KANYO Hospital. With the competition from public hospitals, it made sense for a private institution to advertise. She didn’t find it suspicious.
“Okay, thank you,” she said with a brilliant smile.
The head nurse’s mood lifted slightly—it was impossible not to be charmed by such a smile. But then she saw Joshua and Hannah approaching, hand in hand, and her good mood vanished.
Marguerite’s smile also disappeared the moment she turned around. There they were, the main characters of this little drama, right in front of her. It seemed she just couldn’t avoid them.
Seeing that he had her attention, Joshua stopped, a smug look on his face. He tightened his grip on Hannah’s hand, lacing their fingers together, and shot a provocative glance at Marguerite, raising an eyebrow.
Marguerite rolled her eyes so hard she nearly saw the back of her own skull. What was his problem? Was he trying to show off his new girlfriend just days after their breakup? Like anyone cared.
Hannah, who had seen her fair share of beautiful women in the entertainment industry, had to admit that Marguerite was stunning. Her first thought was a pang of jealousy: Is Joshua falling for this girl? After all, his reputation as a playboy was well-known. But when Marguerite turned to face them, Joshua didn’t let go of her hand; instead, he held it even tighter.
Hannah relaxed. Joshua was truly hers now. The prodigal son had returned, and he loved only her.
She was, however, surprised by the girl’s blatant eye-roll. But then again, it was understandable. After all, she had deceived Marguerite’s brother, and now here she was with another man.
Joshua, on the other hand, was thrilled by the eye-roll. She’s jealous! he thought. Serves you right. You could have had me back, but you had to play hard to get.
Marguerite had no desire to watch this pathetic display or speak to either of them. She turned and strode back toward her room.
Joshua was nothing if not persistent. He would undoubtedly try to talk to Marguerite, and one wrong word from her could expose the entire plan. One more piece needed to be set in place.
————
Having successfully paraded his new relationship in front of Marguerite, Joshua stopped his incessant pacing and waited by his phone. But hours passed, and no friend request from Marguerite appeared. He scowled, his brow furrowed so deeply he could have crushed a fly between his eyebrows.
She’s still too proud to make the first move.
Fine. He would give her an out. He would go to her and suggest they talk.
Hannah, exhausted from the day’s activities, was fast asleep. Joshua tiptoed out of the room. But just as he stepped into the hallway, he saw a figure dressed in white enter the room next door.
