He slapped Yellow on the back of the head. “Did that hurt?”
It was a swift, unexpected strike.
Tears welled up in Yellow’s eyes. “Yeah! That hurt like hell!”
Marguerite rubbed her nose. Being this delinquent’s sidekick must be some kind of karmic punishment.
“You could have hit yourself. Why’d you have to hit Yellow?” she chided, frowning.
Yellow’s tears flowed even more freely. “Waaah! The angel sister is so nice! I was lying, it didn’t hurt at all. Don’t worry, angel sister…”
He was getting a bit loud. Marguerite’s mouth twitched.
Aaron pinched Yellow’s lips shut with two fingers, manually muting him. His eyes remained fixed on Marguerite.
“Marguerite, are you really alive?”
Tears rolled down the thin, brooding boy’s face, falling to the ground. “But how is that possible?” he choked out.
Seeing his boss—a guy as tough as steel who never cried even when beaten half to death—actually shed tears, Yellow’s own crying jag came to an abrupt halt. He fumbled in his pocket and pulled out a crumpled tissue. “Why are you crying?”
They were standing right at the gym entrance, and a crowd was starting to gather, drawn by the scene. A beautiful girl and the star player from the game—it was hard not to stare.
Marguerite noticed. She slung an arm around Aaron’s shoulder. “Come on, this isn't the place to talk. I’ll treat you to some bubble tea.”
She remembered there used to be a bunch of bubble tea shops just outside Pinecrest. One of them had an amazing jasmine milk tea. She wondered if it was still there.
Aaron glared at him from under his bangs. “What do you think?”
Yellow grinned, showing all eight teeth. “Heh, thanks!”
Cedric had also assumed Marguerite was running toward Joseph. But then he saw her approach the captain from Westside High. His jaw dropped.
Had Marguerite switched allegiances after just one game? She was incredibly direct—see someone you like, go talk to them, no hesitation. That was a rich girl for you.
Cedric didn't know the Westside kids, so he didn't follow. He’d been in the same class as Joseph for years and never really liked the guy. He was too arrogant. He didn't deserve a girl like her.
Marguerite was about to lead Aaron and Yellow away from the gym when a wave of screams erupted from the crowd.
“Oh my god! It’s Joshua! Joshua Spencer is here!”
