“Mm.”
As Silas casually mentioned food, a realization struck Emma—her stomach was beginning to grumble in protest. With a playful tug, she pulled him closer, a smile dancing on her lips. “Come on, let’s whip up something delicious before we starve to death!”
“Sure thing,” he replied, a hint of enthusiasm in his tone. “You teach me, and I’ll handle the cooking.”
Together, they made their way into the kitchen, an inviting space filled with the aroma of past meals and the promise of new ones.
Emma reached into the cold storage compartment embedded in her Stasis Band, her eyes landing on a thick slab of beast meat that looked absolutely perfect for grilling.
“What do you think about some barbecue?” she suggested, her excitement bubbling over.
“Sounds fantastic to me,” Silas responded, his hands already reaching for the meat she had pointed out. He followed her instructions with unwavering focus, his calm demeanor making the process seem effortless.
Leaning against the counter, Emma watched him intently as he sliced and seasoned the meat with precision. There was a certain charm to him, a rugged handsomeness that took on a new light as he worked—quiet, concentrated, and utterly engrossed in the task at hand.
“Silas,” she called out suddenly, breaking the comfortable silence, “are you planning to head back to work once we finish eating?”
Despite the earlier confrontation he had with Lucien and Edric, Emma knew him too well; he was a man who took his duties seriously, never one to leave a task unfinished. She had seen him earlier, juggling messages and orders on his lightcore, his brow furrowed in concentration even in the brief moments he paused to breathe.
“Yeah,” he admitted, his tone shifting slightly as he paused mid-slice. “Emma, I’m really sorry. I kind of vanished back there on the outer battlefield, and now that I’m back, it feels like there’s an avalanche of reports waiting for me. I just can’t seem to find a moment to breathe these days.”
A frown creased his handsome features, guilt flickering in his striking blue eyes, and Emma felt a pang of sympathy for him.
“It’s alright,” she replied softly, her voice soothing. “You have real responsibilities to handle. Don’t worry about me. Lucien and the others are looking out for me, and I can take care of myself. Just focus on your work. I’ll be right here when you get home.”
He was a commander, after all; his duties were essential for the safety of the entire Empire. Emma wasn’t about to make him feel torn between his obligations and her presence.
“Thanks, Emma.” His smile this time was genuine, a warmth spreading across his face that made her heart flutter.
After washing his hands, he retrieved four small glowing leaves, placing them delicately into her palm.
“Keep these with you. If I’m not around and you happen to get hurt or start feeling unwell, eat one. The same goes for Lucien or the others—just one each.”
Emma’s mind flashed back to the previous night when he had used one of those miraculous leaves on Drake. The healing had been nothing short of extraordinary.
Each plant he cultivated yielded seven leaves before blooming a single flower. After his last recovery, only one flower had blossomed—seven leaves in total.
Drake had received one. Edric and Lucien each got one as well. That left four.
Now he was handing her all of them?
What’s he trying to do—pluck himself bald?
A frown crossed Emma’s face as she pressed one leaf back into his hand. “If you give me everything, what will you have left? You should keep one for yourself.”
