**When She Opened the Door to the Life She Was Afraid to Live by Nora Vale Kingsley**
**Chapter 243: The Game Begins**
Corvin’s eyes widened in disbelief, his mind racing to grasp the implications of what he had just heard. “Cotton Candy… is actually a therian?” His voice trembled slightly, the weight of the revelation settling heavily upon him.
Edric, equally taken aback, stared at Corvin as if he had just declared the sky was green. “If even Marcus couldn’t detect what he is, could he be Rank 11 too?” The thought hung in the air, thick with uncertainty and intrigue.
Emma shook her head slowly, her brow furrowing in contemplation. “We still can’t be certain whether he’s a therian. But Silas mentioned that if he truly is, he’s only been by my side because he wants to bond with me.” The implications of that statement sent a shiver down her spine.
Corvin froze, a wild thought igniting in his mind like a spark in dry grass. “Emma, the baby in your belly… Don’t tell me it’s Cotton Candy’s?” His voice was a mix of horror and disbelief, the words tumbling out before he could catch them.
“Smack!”
The sound of Marcus’ palm meeting Corvin’s back echoed in the room, nearly sending him sprawling onto the bed.
Edric shot Corvin a look of utter incredulity. “Are you out of your mind? If the baby were Cotton Candy’s, do you really think Emma wouldn’t know?” He shook his head in disbelief, frustration bubbling beneath the surface.
Corvin rubbed the back of his head, wincing at the sting. “What if he did it while Emma was asleep? Maybe that’s how she got pregnant,” he protested weakly, the absurdity of his own words dawning on him.
Marcus’ expression hardened, a cold fury settling in his eyes. “If the baby really is his, I’ll kill him.” The thought of that rabbit daring to touch Emma while she was vulnerable ignited a primal rage within him. He would wait until she gave birth, then ensure that the cub would be thrown to Frostveil to raise, far away from them.
A dangerous chill emanated from Edric as well, his voice low and menacing. “Emma, if it really is Cotton Candy, we won’t let him go unpunished.” The air in the room thickened with their shared resolve.
Emma pressed her palm to her forehead, trying to stave off the growing absurdity of the situation. “It’s absolutely impossible. It’s not Cotton Candy,” she insisted firmly, her voice steady despite the chaos around her. “I was asleep, not dead. If anything like that had happened, I would’ve felt it.”
“Right now, the baby isn’t our concern. What we need to discuss is how to trick Cotton Candy.” She quickly redirected the conversation, her mind racing with possibilities. “I already have a plan, and this hospital stay gives us the perfect opportunity. Silas said that if Cotton Candy wants to be my mate, then the thing he cares about most is me.”
A sly smile crept onto her lips as she outlined her idea. “So, we’ll put on a little play and trick him into revealing his true identity.”
Corvin leaned forward, curiosity piqued. “How do we trick him?” he asked, his eyes bright with intrigue.
Edric and Marcus turned to Emma, their expressions shifting from disbelief to alertness.
“It’s simple,” she replied with a smile that hinted at her confidence. “You three keep my pregnancy a secret. Once we’re home, say I’ve fallen seriously ill.”
The three of them nodded, their agreement palpable in the air.
When she finished, she turned to Edric, her expression serious. “Make sure that family doctor of yours cooperates. Tell him to play along with us.”
He nodded gravely, understanding the gravity of her request. “Understood. I’ll message him right away. Don’t worry, Emma, I won’t let anything go wrong.”
