**When She Opened the Door to the Life She Was Afraid to Live**
**by Nora Vale Kingsley**
**Chapter 266: Run For Your Lives!**

It had been an eternity since Marcus had last set foot in the Frostveil Wolf Clan, and just as long since he had attended to his own home. Dust and neglect had surely claimed his space, and the thought of returning to such disarray filled him with an unexpected sense of dread.

He hadn’t informed his father or any of the clan members about his arrival this time. It felt prudent to sneak in quietly, tidy up the mess, and perhaps even prepare for the inevitable questions that would arise upon his return. The heavy snowfall outside threatened to delay the airship, making it all the more important to arrive before anyone else could catch wind of his homecoming.

Emma, ever perceptive, nodded firmly, her grip tightening around Silas’ hand. “Silas, let’s make our first stop at the Wolf Clan.”

After traveling all the way to Frostveil, it only seemed fitting to pay their respects to the Wolf King before undertaking any other endeavors.

Corvin had been diligent, ensuring the airship was ready for departure. Once they boarded, Emma turned her gaze to Marcus, her curiosity evident. “Marcus, is your house close to your father’s? I think we should visit him as soon as we arrive.”

Marcus hesitated, his eyes flickering to hers with a hint of concern. “Ms. Tibarn, you’ve been journeying on the starrail for days. You must be utterly exhausted. It would be best for you to rest today. I can invite my father to see you tomorrow instead.”

Emma’s frown deepened, her resolve unyielding. “No, that would be quite rude. It’s not proper for an elder to come to visit a younger person. We should go to him. I’ve already prepared gifts for him, so let’s show our respect first and then we can rest at your house.”

Realizing that her mind was set, Marcus sighed in resignation. “Very well then…”

Silas, who had been quietly observing the exchange, couldn’t help but notice the flicker of unease in Marcus’ eyes. Hadn’t he informed the Wolf King of his return?

He recalled how the Frostveil people had practically thrust Marcus into Emma’s hands when they had first met. Silas pressed his lips together, thinking, *Well, whatever happens now, we’re already here. What could the Wolf King possibly do—throw us out?*

The airship surged through the blizzard, slicing through the swirling snow with determination as it glided over the endless white plains.

Hours later, Emma stood by the window, gazing intently at the ground below.

Rows of dark mounds stretched across the snowfield, their shapes almost ghostly against the white backdrop.

“Marcus, is that… the Wolf Clan’s graveyard?” she asked, her voice laced with curiosity.

It seemed logical that the wolves would have a resting place for their dead here. The area was vast; she couldn’t even see the edges from the air.

Marcus’ voice came back flat and devoid of emotion. “Ms. Tibarn, that’s not a graveyard. Those are the houses of the Wolf Clan.”

“Houses?” Emma blinked in disbelief, her mind racing. So the wolves’ architecture reflected their somber aesthetic even in life?

Marcus nodded, his expression serious. “Yes, Ms. Tibarn. They’re constructed from shadowstone. This material is incredibly sturdy and resilient against the harsh winds and relentless snow. Inside, they’re spacious and warm—once you line them with fire crystals from Ashenfall, it feels like spring all year round. Many of our clansfolk live within those walls, raising beasts and cultivating herbs.”

“Oh…” Emma murmured, taken aback by the revelation.

The lightcore rarely broadcasted news about the Four Domains, leaving her in the dark about what life was truly like here.

It was a stroke of luck that she had asked Marcus—otherwise, she might have embarrassed herself later on.
