Edric tapped open his lightcore and saw the message from his subordinates. His pupils constricted sharply.

“Stop joking around.”

Edric spoke flatly, then forwarded the message he’d received into their group chat.

“Take a look at what I just sent.”

At his words, Silas and the other two immediately opened their lightcores.

“The Suncrest Clan found a female human?”

Corvin stared at the screen, shock flaring across his face.

Silas‘ expression hardened.

“Kael Auris has already bonded with that female human, and he’s about to ascend to Rank 11. They’re only uncovering something this important now. The Suncrest Clan really hid this well.”

Marcus glanced between them. “Why are you both so worked up? That female human is Kael’s huntress. This has nothing to do with us.”

So what if a female human appeared?

We don’t need a human to help them evolve, and we already have Emma.

Other people’s problems have nothing to do with us.

Corvin turned toward Marcus. “You’re seriously not surprised? It’s a female human.”

The Empire hadn’t seen one in countless years.

Marcus only shrugged. “Not surprised.”

In her bedroom on the third floor, Emma slept deeply.

The afternoon sunlight slipped through gauzy curtains, scattering a soft, mottled glow across

the floor.

She rolled over and suddenly felt a tickle at her waist. It was like a feather tracing light circles, teasing her skin.

Emma stirred unconsciously, trying to squirm away from it.

But the moment she moved, a hand, firm and insistent, caught her waist, pulling her back into

an embrace.

Lucien’s broad, warm chest pressed tightly against her back.

His breath brushed the hollow of her neck, warm and steady, one exhale after another.

She blinked her eyes open, groggy.

A strip of black silk came into focus before her.

“Lucien?”

At the sight of him, her sleepiness scattered.

“Why are you here?”

Shouldn’t he be resting in his own room?

He didn’t reply. Instead, he tightened his arms around her, resting his chin against her shoulder and rubbing lightly against her, like a man carrying some unspeakable grievance.

Emma’s heart clenched.

“What’s wrong?” Her voice softened instinctively. “Did something happen?”

I had only been gone for a while, and he already looks so forlorn.

Who could have possibly upset him?

“Emma, you lied to me.”

Lucien’s voice came low and husky, with the faintest trace of a nasal catch that made him sound heartbreakingly pitiful.

Thrown off by his tone, Emma turned within his arms, facing him. Her gaze landed on the black silk covering his eyes.

“What did I lie about? Weren’t we playing a game?

“You said I could punish you however I wanted.”

She hadn’t lied.

She’d just… been punishing him.

Lucien knew she wouldn’t admit it.

“Emma,” he said, quietly aggrieved, “do you know what Corvin and the others said about me after you left?”

Emma’s fingers brushed gently over the silk, tracing the shape of his eyes beneath it.

“What did they say? They wouldn’t dare badmouth you, would they?”

Lucien was her first mate. He was strong, respected. Everyone in the household deferred to him.

Who would even dare criticize him?

Lucien fell silent for a moment, as if gathering the courage to say it. Then, heavy and deliberate, he spoke.

“They said… I couldn’t perform.”

Emma was appalled.

Her mind blanked for a second.

Am I still half–asleep?

“Couldn’t… what?”
