**Chapter 397: A Send-off**
色
As Emma busily arranged items for Malrik, a swirl of emotions enveloped him—warmth intertwined with a reluctant sadness that tugged at his heartstrings. He found himself grappling with his feelings, attempting to maintain a facade of strength, but the weight of the moment proved too heavy.
“Ms. Tibarn…” he began, his voice barely above a whisper, “When I go to the army, will you come and visit me?”
His eyes searched hers, a blend of affection and trepidation mirrored in his expression, revealing the vulnerability he often tried to hide.
Emma paused in her preparations, her hands momentarily stilling as she turned to face him. The sight of Malrik, clinging to her with a mix of anxiety and need, stirred something deep within her. She felt her heart soften, a gentle ache blooming in her chest.
“Well, I’m not sure if I’m allowed to just go there,” she replied thoughtfully, her brow furrowing slightly. After all, the army base wasn’t exactly a public park.
Malrik’s face fell at her words, the light in his eyes dimming as a wave of sadness washed over him. It felt as though the very air had thickened, and he struggled to hold back the tears that threatened to spill forth.
Emma hadn’t anticipated how much he would lean on her, how much he would rely on her presence. After a moment of contemplation, she offered, “How about I ask Calum later? If he gives me the green light, I’ll definitely come to see you.”
In an instant, Malrik’s expression transformed, hope igniting within him. He grasped her hand eagerly, pulling her toward the door with an infectious excitement.
“Ms. Tibarn, let’s go ask Calum right now!”
Just as he spoke, the door swung open, revealing Calum’s tall figure silhouetted against the light. He paused at the threshold, his eyes widening slightly at the sight of Malrik awake, a careful caution etched across his features as he remained rooted in place.
“Ms. Tibarn, the people coming for Malrik will be here shortly,” Calum announced, his voice steady as he stood in the doorway, an imposing presence.
Malrik, now more aware and clear-headed, refrained from calling Calum his father or offering him any fruit. Instead, he simply absorbed the moment, recalling that his father had long, flowing white hair, while Calum’s was cropped short and practical.
As the realization that visitors were imminent settled in, Emma quickly stashed away the items she had been holding into Malrik’s storage band. She then rushed over to Calum, her urgency palpable. “Once Malrik is in the army, can I go see him?”
Calum nodded, a reassuring smile breaking across his face. “Absolutely. You can visit wherever you wish. I can even show you around.”
With the entire army under his command, arranging a visit to the military base would be a mere formality for him.
Emma felt a wave of relief wash over her, and she turned back to Malrik, her voice brightening with excitement. “Did you hear that? Calum said I can come and see you! Just focus on getting better while you’re there. I’ll visit in a few days once Marcus and Lucien return.”
Malrik’s face lit up like a sunrise at her words, his heart swelling with joy. “Okay!” he exclaimed, his enthusiasm infectious.
Before long, the sound of footsteps echoed through the hall as Calum’s people arrived to escort Malrik. Emma handed over everything she had gathered from the storage band, her voice filled with urgency.
