Chapter 386: It’s mine now

Damon wiped a smear of ichor from his cheek. He now understood how he needed to fight here. Energy conservation was the name of the game. There wasn’t a single hit solution for this problem. The Abyss didn’t need to overpower its enemies. It simply forced them to choke on inefficiency until they broke.

Damon adjusted his attitude and continued moving further in. He never planned to stay here for long. There were three things he came for. Three things he could reach without getting much further into this godforsaken place.

He continued moving through the ruins and fissures, and finally, after three more waves of abyssal spawns, he reached his first target.

The ruins around him shifted from half-collapsed houses and shattered cobblestones into something far worse. Here, the earth itself had caved inward, leaving behind a cratered scar where an entire district used to stand. The black fog pooled thickest here, roiling like liquid tar, and at the very center was a mound of writhing ichor shaped like a nest.

Damon’s crimson eyes sharpened. This was it, the first target he had marked from memories of his past life. He hurriedly approached the nest and searched around it. It was not difficult to find what he was looking for, and he spotted it in a second.

A shiny black egg with silver streaks!

Damon tried to inspect it, but nothing really showed up. "This is it." In his last life, someone else, someone random, had managed to find this egg and take it. The guy was even pretty sure that this was a dragon’s egg. All of a sudden, he ended up becoming a huge celebrity, and everyone patiently looked forward to the big shot actually hatching a dragon’s egg.

In the end, nothing of that sort happened. The guy tried every method he could get his hands on for the next two years, making alliances with many guilds and taking many people’s help, but until the very end, he was unable to hatch the egg.

All he got was a life full of endless misery, where he was always hunted down and had to scramble for his life. It was a good thing that the egg was a soul bound did not drop that easily. Otherwise, he would have lost it a long time ago.

Not that it did him any good. All the deaths only made it difficult for him to progress. He couldn’t exactly get the egg to hatch, and he also couldn’t sell it for good money to someone else or even drop the damn hot potato from his hands. He was just stuck with the egg. He even lamented in public that the egg brought him endless bad luck and called it a curse.

But Damon was not worried about those things. He had access to things that the other guy probably never had. He also had a lot of ideas to try and hatch the thing. He was not too stressed about it.

"A dragon’s egg, huh?" He hurriedly grabbed the egg and pocketed it. Almost immediately, he felt a presence wash over him, but it was only for a fraction of a second before it disappeared.

When Damon turned around, a chorus of snarls rippled through the fog. Shapes slinked into view, sleek, wolf-like with hides made of jagged obsidian blades dripping ichor. Their eyes glowed a sickly green, locking on to the egg tucked away in Damon’s possession.
