Her lips pressed into a thin line, her eyes darting between Damon and Mark, the two idiots behaving as if they were having the time of their lives. What was so special about these women that these supposedly composed, self-controlled men were acting like drunkards at their first festival?

The mermaids twirled and laughed, scales shimmering like gemstones under the lantern-jellies, and Damon and Mark looked as if they were hypnotized, spellbound fools basking in the attention. They were just fish women for godsake!

She exhaled loudly through her nose, muttering under her breath, "They’re impossible. Absolutely impossible. Next thing I know, they’ll be fighting over who gets to ’respect’ the culture more."

In the end, as more and more appeared and almost pleaded with Damon and Mark with googly eyes, she could only reluctantly give up. "Fine. You guys do whatever you want."

Damon laughed and then sank his fangs into one of the mermaids, maintaining eye contact with Kate as if he was hell bent on infuriating her.

Kate gave him a death glare and turned away, but the next second, her eyes widened as a hand roughly grabbed her chin. Before she could resist, a pair of lips landed on her, and delicious blood flowed into her mouth.

Kate looked up to see a pair of hungry predatory eyes staring at her. She froze, her body going rigid as the taste hit her tongue. It was warm, rich, unlike anything she’d ever drunk before.

It sent a shiver racing down her spine, her blood humming with a strange fire that felt both intoxicating and dangerous. Her fingers curled instinctively, torn between pushing the goofy idiot away and pulling him closer.

And he was not looking that goofy at the moment. His eyes demanded something, and her heart started racing at the thought of it.

Damon did not wait for her to react anymore. He let go of her chin and then yanked her from her coral chair, pulling her hand.

Kate stumbled forward, her pulse hammering in her ears. His grip was firm, possessive, leaving no room for refusal. "Damon—!" she started, but she swallowed the rest of the words as she met the crimson eyes.

He pulled her closer until the space between them vanished. His lips brushed against her ear. "I cannot act like some prude and wait for you any longer. I want you now."

Kate gasped. "Damon, my brother." She hurriedly looked towards Mark, her face red with embarrassment. But Mark was nowhere to be seen. Even Kaelthorn and Riven were missing. Kate couldn’t come up with any excuses. Luckily, her eyes landed on Erin and Ellora, who were still there.

"Erin-" She started, but Damon placed a finger firmly on her lips. "Don’t look at others. Look at me and only me." With that, he picked her up and sat back on his throne, making her straddle him.

Her heart thundered. Every nerve screamed at her to resist, to shove him back, to regain control of the situation, but the fire coursing through her veins from his earlier kiss made her body hesitate, her body pressed intimately against his.

The world around them faded, the sounds of the mermaids and the distant laughter of the others becoming a distant hum, drowned out by the pounding of her own heart.
