Jordan Smith’s face went pale, anger simmering just beneath the surface. He felt completely betrayed. It was like someone had sprinkled salt right into his wounds. Just when he thought there was hope for his treatment, when he was riding high on optimism, everything had crashed down around him.

He wanted to reject reality, but there was no way out. With a deep breath, he forced himself to keep his cool and looked at the director. “I’ll need to reconsider next year’s research funding.”

The director’s face immediately turned anxious. Everyone at the institute knew that The Smith Group was their biggest supporter. Without their funding, all their projects would come to a grinding halt.

“I’m so sorry, Mr. Smith. This really was our mistake, but please, don’t pull the funding. We’re already halfway through our current projects. We’ll do everything we can to improve the success rate, I promise…”

He tried to plead his case, desperate for a second chance. But Jordan didn’t even look back. He just signaled to Nathan Gates to take him out of there.

Even after they left the research institute, Jordan was still surrounded by a heavy, chilly tension.

Nathan hesitated a couple of seconds before speaking up. “Sir, I think there’s a chance Mr. Williams had something to do with this.”

Jordan looked up, his eyes cold. “What do you mean?”

Nathan explained, “Mr. Williams came back to the country a few days ago. Not long after, a bunch of scandals broke out about The Lee Group. The police even took the three main members of the Lee family into custody. I just got confirmation of something else too. The person who attacked Ms. Davis abroad was Cynthia Lee. She used Sandra Taylor and Lavinia Roberts to do her dirty work, while she hid behind the scenes, pulling the strings.”

Nathan went on, “There’s more. When we were looking into Professor Keri, Dennis Williams’s team actually warned us to stop, but we didn’t listen. Our contact with Professor Keri’s people almost messed up their sting operation.”

He had only recently pieced all this together. “Honestly, I think Mr. Williams started planning to take down The Lee Family while he was still in Kaston. Maybe he kept you here just to make sure we didn’t mess things up again.”

None of this made Jordan look any less upset. He didn’t care what Dennis Williams’s reasons were. It didn’t change the fact that his hope had been crushed just when he needed it most.

Nathan understood why his boss was so angry, but there wasn’t much else to say. After all, Dennis Williams had done what he did to save Ms. Davis, and that was understandable. It was just that they always seemed to be a step too late.

Nathan decided to change the subject. “I also heard Mr. Williams is pulling in medical experts from all over the world to Cabinda. Word is, there’s no real antidote for what happened to Ms. Davis. No one knows when, or even if, a cure will ever be found.”
