Chapter 110
Sebastian barks at me. I don’t need to hear the words to know that he’s telling me to just do it. So, I do, realizing instantly that my claws digging into the ice make it easier for me to get across. I yip excitedly as I get to the next landing, but it cuts off when I see the fire. Shit, I need to be really fast so my wolf’s fur doesn’t catch on fire.
I race across as fast as I can, bracing myself for the final blast of fire. I can feel the heat of the flames and I’m pretty sure my fur is on fire, but as I run through the end of the challenge and onto the platform, I run through a spray of water, drenching my coat. I shake the water off and realize that this is why the ice came first. There’s no way I could get across the ice feature while dripping water and the water is necessary to ensure we don’t burn alive.
I look at the next challenge. It’s a bar swing. One bar to get across to the next platform. If I leap on it, the momentum will make the swing push out and I’ll fall. As I try to figure it out, Sebastian races up, leaps, grabbing his bar with his mouth before beginning to swing back and forth.
I don’t wait to see if it works, I step back and race forward, grabbing the bar with my teeth and swinging hard, releasing when I’m just about to start the backward swing then looking for the landing. I hit it just right and take off for the next challenge. Behind me, I hear Sebastian scrambling to get on the landing. He must have almost missed it.
This challenge has targets again, and as I look at them, I see the holes are different, narrower than the arrows. I check the launchers and then leap, feeling something graze the fur on my stomach before I hear it sink into the target. I turn and look. A knife.
Chapter 116.
I turn back checking the next target and make my way across, carefully avoiding the knives. When I’m across, I realize there’s only one challenge left. The wall.
I run as hard as I can and rather than leaping. I use my claws and the momentum to rush up as high as I can before I feel my paws beginning to slide. I scrape my claws, trying to find anything to grab onto as I hear Sebastian’s wolf hit the wall beside mine. He’s right behind me.
I hear his claws scrabbling on the wall, just like mine, but I find a spot and pull myself up, my back paws looking for some leverage. When I find it, I push up again and again until I get a paw over the top of the
wall.
I can hear Sebastian beside me. I know he’s almost to the top, but I refuse to be defeated today, not when I’m so close!
I use my strength and adrenaline and pull myself over the top and turn, seeing Sebastian pulling himself over right behind me.
I howl my excitement to the sky, hearing the answering howls of the others. Just as my howl cuts off, I feel Sebastian’s strong arms slide around my wolf’s neck.
“Well done, Christina. I knew you could do it.”
Sebastian
I could hardly sleep last night. Yeah, I was more relaxed than I can remember being in a long time, physically. But mentally, I’m a wreck.
James noticed first thing when I walked into breakfast, and he pulled me aside.
“You look like shit,” he said without preamble.
Chapter 110
I scrubbed my face with my hands, not knowing any better way to say it than to just come out with it.
