Another tear slips out as she tries and fails to take a deep breath.

“Breathe,” I say, putting my mouth near her ear. “Follow my breaths,” I tell her.

“I’m sorry,” she whimpers, her voice and breath are both still choppy.

“Don’t apologize. Just follow my breaths,” I say as I begin rubbing her head in the way I know she likes. I leave one hand on her stomach, putting light pressure so she knows she’s safe while I breathe near her ear and rub her head.
