By the time Wesley's call came through, Winona had been staring at the trending topic for a while. She wondered who had the power to push her to the top of the charts overnight. She was practically a celebrity.
"It's okay, Wesley. Don't worry about me. I've done nothing wrong, so I have nothing to fear," she said, trying to soothe him. Besides, her divorce hearing with Julian was coming up soon. It would be a public trial, and everyone would learn the truth then. In a way, this was free publicity.
She had a good idea of who was behind it. It had to be either Hattie Warren or Mackenzie Chamberlain. Her gut told her Xander wouldn't do something like this. And Claud and Mayo were Julian's friends; they knew about the impending divorce and wouldn't be so foolish. That left Hattie and Mackenzie, who both hated her with a passion.
Her phone rang again. Without thinking, she answered, "Wesley, really, don't worry. I'm fine."
"Bitch! You've become a superstar overnight, haven't you?" a man's voice snarled on the other end.
It took Winona a moment to place the voice. It was Clayton.
"It was you?" She was genuinely surprised.
Clayton sneered. "Bitch, I've had it with you for a long time. I don't play by Greenwood City's rules, and I'm not putting up with your crap. Making you a trending topic is my gift to you. If you don't want to get rotten eggs thrown at you on the street, then take your low-class family and get the hell out of Greenwood City!"
"What did I ever do to you, Clayton?" Winona was baffled. Clayton wasn't even from Greenwood City. He'd always been condescending, but he'd never hated her with the same intensity as Mackenzie and Hattie.
"Did Miss Shepherd ever do anything to you? You're clinging to her boyfriend and won't let go! You even roped Yves Prescott into meddling with the project! This project is not a game! It's a joint venture between Port City, Greenwood City, and several Italian partners, involving tens of billions of dollars! What right does a mistress have to interfere?"
She walked out of her bedroom and saw her so-called grandmother, Helga Perkins, bustling in the kitchen. The old woman was humming a tune as she stirred a pot of porridge. Even at this early hour, she was standing in the kitchen wearing a pair of four-inch heels, looking as stylish as ever.
"Helga Perkins!" Winona called out, her voice sharp.
The old woman, who had been singing a moment before, jumped in fright. She looked at Winona timidly. "What is it, dear? Did Grandma do something wrong again?" She was smart enough to know that when Winona used her full name, something was very wrong.
"You felt sorry for someone else, you wanted to be the good guy, so you forced your granddaughter not to press charges against that old man," Winona said, glaring at her. "Well, look what happened. That old man made your granddaughter a trending topic. I'm now the most famous mistress in Greenwood City."
