When Felicity saw the news about Winona being exposed that morning, she had received a call from Clayton.
"Miss Shepherd, I've made that homewrecker a top trending topic. Now the whole city can condemn her. Are you happy with your gift?"
Felicity had been speechless. With the divorce so close, the last thing she wanted was for Winona to be thrust into the spotlight. She was afraid it would complicate things. But she couldn't say that, so she had forced a smile and said, "Thank you."
A sense of unease had settled in her stomach. She worried that if Winona was publicly shamed, Julian might step in to defend her.
Her fears were not unfounded. Just three hours later, the trending topic had updated with new content: Julian, publicly embracing Winona outside the hospital.
Felicity was so enraged she almost smashed her phone. "Are these reporters idiots? The more they attack her, the more Julian will protect her! If they push him too far, he might…" She caught herself mid-sentence and fell silent.
"Has Mr. Nicholson lost his mind? He's actually defending a mistress in public!" Clayton fumed on her behalf. "We exposed Winona to drive her out of Greenwood City, but if Mr. Nicholson is protecting her like this, she'll never want to leave! Ugh…"
Felicity, consumed with anxiety, couldn't even hear what Clayton was saying. She had lost all focus on the project that had once been her entire world.
A technician approached her. "Ms. Shepherd, the wood has all been dried, but I think there's still a slight discrepancy…"
"We're not building a rocket ship! A centimeter or two is normal!" she snapped.
The technician said no more. The chief engineer had signed off on it, and he had raised his concerns. If something went wrong later, it wouldn't be his fault. He quietly returned to his station.
Felicity sank into thought. It was obvious Xander was right. She couldn't lose her composure now. "Thank you, Xander. I'll call Julian right now and tell him to take good care of her."
She immediately dialed Julian's number. It rang and rang, but no one answered. It went to voicemail.
He wasn't picking up her calls? A knot of anxiety tightened in Felicity's chest. She dialed the number again. It rang for a long time, and just as she was about to give up, someone answered.
"Julian," she said, not waiting for the other person to speak, "don't think about anything right now. Just focus on protecting Winona. After all, she is—"
"This isn't your boyfriend, Julian. It's Winona," a cold voice on the other end said. "He's in the shower."
