At five years old, a child couldn't possibly understand the full meaning of "blind and foolish."
She just knew that her mommy had started dating Mr. Prescott right after divorcing her daddy. It meant her daddy didn't want her mommy, didn't love her mommy. But Mr. Prescott loved her mommy very much, and he thought any man who didn't was blind and foolish.
That was why she asked the question. The little girl had no idea she was twisting a knife in her own father's heart.
Julian looked down at Tiana, unsure how to answer his daughter.
The previous night, Tiana had cried for her mother. Today, after spending the morning at the construction site and the afternoon in meetings, he had planned to visit Felicity at the hospital. But Sue, the housekeeper, called to say that Tiana was throwing a tantrum after being picked up from kindergarten, demanding to go see Zane.
"Tiana said her mother promised she could visit her brother and her anytime," Sue had explained.
Left with no choice, Julian had driven to Tiana's kindergarten, picked her up, and taken her to Zane's. But when they arrived, the teacher told him that Zane had been picked up at noon by his mother and father.
His father? Where did Zane get a father?
Then it hit him. It must have been Yves and Winona.
Unable to see Zane or her mother, Tiana grew even more sullen. Julian took her out for a meal and then to a playground, hoping to tire her out so she'd want to go home and sleep. But by eight o'clock, she was still insisting on finding her mother and brother.
Finally, Tiana pleaded, "Daddy, I won't go inside Mommy's house. Can we just watch from outside? Just for a little peek at Mommy and my brother, please?"
Seeing the desperation in his daughter's eyes, Julian felt a wave of pity. This was all his fault. He was the reason his daughter couldn't live with both her parents.
