Before Janetta's hand could land, Clayton caught her wrist. "Janetta, you can't hit her here!"
Janetta froze, then erupted in fury. "Clayton! Your mother and I have been friends for decades! The Nicholson family has always treated you well, and Julian brought you into this project. And now you're defending this beggar, this piece of filth, this vampire?"
"Janetta, I'm not taking sides. I just think she hasn't done anything to offend you. She has no connection to you anymore, and it's wrong for you to strike her like this." Clayton remained unmoved by her words and showed no intention of letting go. He had made his stance clear: he was protecting Winona.
Seeing Clayton wouldn't budge, she turned to Shera, her voice shrill. "Shera, go and beat that vampire for me! I want you to ruin her face!"
Janetta's command shocked everyone on site, except for Felicity. They couldn't believe that the matriarch and daughter of Greenwood City's most elite family would resort to physical violence at a construction site.
So much for the legendary self-control of the upper class. It turned out that even the most refined people had their limits, and their composure depended on the time, place, and person. Janetta and Shera could be gracious and even accepting of a daughter-in-law from a lower social standing.
But when it came to Winona, all bets were off. Janetta believed Winona had ruined the first half of her son's life and humiliated the entire Nicholson family. She had originally planned for her son to marry the daughter of another close friend, a hope Winona had dashed. Worse, when Winona married Julian, she was little more than a parentless, destitute beggar. For a beggar to suddenly marry into their prestigious family was the ultimate disgrace.
Shera's hatred for Winona was even more intense. She felt that being granted the title of a Nicholson daughter-in-law was a blessing Winona should have been eternally grateful for. Instead of obediently providing blood for Shera's son, she had repeatedly put his life in danger. Her hatred was as raw and visceral as that of a victim's family for a murderer.
