Felicity smiled back, her tone cool and confident. "Miss Perkins, from the sound of it, are you trying to curse me?"
"Of course not," Winona replied, her voice sounding a little thin. "I just feel like such a failure. My six years of marriage with Julian were a loveless sham. In the end, you two are the ones who are truly in love. I sincerely wish you the best. You'll be a family of five soon. I hope you'll all be very happy."
With that, she turned and walked away.
"You really expect me to believe you're that kind?" Felicity couldn't help but call after her.
"No," Winona answered bluntly.
The response left Felicity speechless.
"I just don't want to stand here in public, pitting ourselves against each other like this. It's humiliating," Winona added. "Besides, I genuinely hope my daughter will have a stepmother who can treat her like her own."
Felicity was left staring after her.
Winona was already some distance away, with Yves Prescott's arm protectively around her waist. She looked so frail, yet she had such a powerful protector. The sight left Felicity stunned for a long moment before she came to her senses.
She turned to address the remaining crowd. "Alright, everyone, show's over. This is a worksite, not a place for gossip…"
But she found that everyone had already dispersed. Even Xander was walking away.
Watching his retreating back, Felicity suddenly called out, "Xander, you came here specifically to back Winona up today, didn't you?"
"Felly, I was wrong," Xander said, looking at her earnestly. "Please forgive me. I will never again suggest that you terminate your pregnancy. If you need any check-ups in the future, I'll arrange them for you."
He figured he had done all he could as a friend and a neighbor. Some people had to walk their own paths. Felicity, for instance, had knowingly gotten involved with a married man. The humiliation of having filth thrown at her in public wasn't a random accident; it was an inevitable consequence of her choices. That led to being blasted with a cold-water hose, which in turn led to a severe viral infection and a dangerously high fever in the middle of the night.
Following that chain of events, her babies…
Xander didn't dare think about it. He could only hope the children would be all right. After all, every newborn in this world is innocent.
"Thank you, Xander. You'll always see me as a friend, as a little sister, right?" Felicity asked wistfully.
