"Old woman, even if you bowed before my grandmother a hundred times, a thousand times, could that ever bring back the fifty years you stole from her?"
"You apologized because you owed her that. What does that have to do with Yves Prescott taking your family's properties? I'm asking you, what does one have to do with the other? Answer me!" By the end, Winona's voice was sharp with a chilling fury.
Old Mrs. Shepherd, thoroughly intimidated, didn't dare utter a sound.
Winona then turned her steely gaze on Old Mr. Shepherd. "And you, Mr. Shepherd. Does your apology to my grandmother have anything to do with Yves Prescott seizing your assets? Please, answer me!"
Old Mr. Shepherd remained silent. He knew he and June had acted despicably. They had used a young woman for six years, letting her care for his parents and sister, only to discard her and ruin the next fifty years of her life. Was a single apology too much to ask? Not at all. Yet the moment he realized he wouldn't get his house back, his demeanor had changed. This wasn't a sincere apology; it was a desperate, self-serving plea. Winona was no fool. She was far too intelligent to let them off so easily.
"Nona, even if I apologized a hundred times, it wouldn't be enough. Even if I died to atone for my sins, it wouldn't make up for what I owe your grandmother," Old Mr. Shepherd finally said, his voice heavy with genuine remorse.
"Exactly," Winona sneered. "Yves Prescott bankrupted your family to avenge my grandmother, yes. But even if he cast you into the deepest pit of hell, you and your mistress would *still* owe my grandmother an apology. Did you really think you were in any position to bargain with her?"
"No," he admitted quietly.
"Since you understand, please leave my home. My grandmother is elderly and needs to rest," Winona said, her tone polite but firm.
"Nona… isn't there… can't you find it in your heart to…" Old Mr. Shepherd began, his voice strained with shame.
But Winona cut him off. "There is no goodwill between us to appeal to. Being homeless is the fate you've earned. Please leave, Mr. Shepherd."
