Henrietta felt as if she had turned to stone. After a long moment, she heard her own voice, distant and trembling. "Doctor, are you sure you're not mistaken? How is that possible? We haven't been exposed to any chemicals or anything like that. Why do people in my family keep getting blood diseases?"
The doctor's brow furrowed slightly. "Someone else in your family has this condition?"
Her lips quivered. "My… my second son. He passed away from this ten years ago."
The doctor was silent for a moment, his expression softening with sympathy. "There are still many areas of medicine we don't fully understand. With many diseases, it's impossible to pinpoint a cause. If two male members of your family have developed this, is it possible they were exposed to some form of radiation at the same time?"
Henrietta shook her head emphatically. "Absolutely not!"
The doctor shrugged. "Then… it's unknown. But try not to worry too much, Mrs. Henrietta. Your husband is in the early stages. If he can maintain a positive outlook and get proper nutrition, it's possible he could recover."
"That's a relief," Henrietta said, a small measure of calm returning to her.
She left the office, her face still etched with worry. In the hallway, Old Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd, along with Felicity and Jason, were waiting anxiously.
"Henrietta, how is Teague? Is the bleeding better? What are we going to do? It's like the roof is leaking during a storm. We've been forced out of our home, living off the charity of others, and now my son is sick…" Old Mrs. Shepherd began to wail.
"Stop your howling! It's too early to be mourning your son!" Henrietta snapped, her patience gone. She couldn't stand the sight of her mother-in-law anymore. This whole mess with Yves Prescott, being thrown out of their home—it was all because of this insufferable old woman and her ridiculous pride. Too old to admit she was wrong, still clinging to her sense of superiority. What a vain, dramatic old fool. Why didn't she just die?
Startled by her daughter-in-law's outburst, Old Mrs. Shepherd fell silent.
"Really?" Henrietta asked, her eyes filled with tears.
Felicity met her gaze. "I promise you, my brother, my father, and I will be fine. Even if there's a major problem, the billions Mr. Frank gave me, along with Julian's assets, are more than enough to find the best treatment in the world."
Henrietta's resolve hardened. "You and your brother need to get tested as soon as possible."
"We will."
The next morning, Felicity and Jason went to the hospital for their tests, fasting as required, accompanied by Henrietta and Old Mr. Shepherd.
