"Yves, I can't let you do this. It makes me uneasy," Winona said, her voice serious. "The feud between my grandmother and the Shepherds is a private matter. If it escalates into a war between you and Julian, it could be disastrous for both the Nicholson Group and the Prescott Group. As much as I want justice for my grandmother, it's our personal battle. It's not right to drag the Prescott Group into it. So let's stop. The revenge ends here."
She spoke with finality, with no intention of playing games. Just as Helga had said, though her life had been lonely, in her old age she now had Winona, Mia, and Zane. She was content. Whatever suffering Helga had endured, it wasn't worth jeopardizing Yves Prescott. There was no logic in that.
"Don't worry about my grandmother," Winona added earnestly. "I can reason with her. She may be illiterate and a bit of a nag sometimes, but she listens to me. Once I explain the situation, she'll understand. She's actually very pragmatic when it counts."
Yves shook his head. "Winona, what do you think the meaning of life is?"
"Many things," she answered. "Family, friends, children, career." After a pause, she added with a small smile, "And love, hate, and everything in between."
Yves smiled back. "For me, the meaning of life is to live without regrets. Life is short. Why not live it to the fullest?"
"Take my own life, for example. For over twenty years, my mother was my father's legal wife, but she lived in quiet desperation. He even sent me abroad and forbade me from returning, cutting off my allowance. I was a son of the Prescott Group, but the university I attended was partially funded by scholarships, so I didn't need the family's money. I earned my own keep, for books and living expenses, all while dodging assassination attempts from my half-siblings. Back then, I decided my sole purpose in life was to destroy every last one of them."
Winona listened, captivated.
"You see," he continued, "at different stages of life, the meaning can be that simple."
