At that moment, Winona was having lunch with Zane and Yves Prescott. The little boy had been clamoring to see "Dad Prescott," a fact that conveniently created numerous opportunities for Yves and Winona to meet. Every time he saw Yves, Zane's little mouth would chatter on, "Dad Prescott, Dad Prescott," nonstop.
The sound was sweeter than honey to Yves's ears.
"One day, everything I own will belong to you, Zane," Yves said, gently patting the boy's head, one side of which was still buzzed short.
"No, thank you," Zane replied, looking up at him obediently.
Yves was a little surprised. "Why not? Is my money not good enough for you?"
Zane shook his head. "Mommy likes having a family. I want you and Mommy to have more babies so our house will be full and lively. You can leave your money to my little brothers and sisters. I'll be the oldest, so I can take care of them. I don't need your money, Dad Prescott. I just don't want Mommy to only have me."
The little boy spoke with a wisdom and empathy far beyond his years. Perhaps it was because he had been abandoned by his birth parents, leaving him with a deep-seated fear of loss that made him so unusually considerate.
A pang of sorrow shot through Yves's heart. He thought of his own father, who had kept mistress after mistress behind his mother's back. He had so many half-siblings, both known and unknown, that he couldn't even count them all. Some he had never even met. Under their father's unfair treatment, they had all schemed and fought, turning on one another like wolves.
In the end, he, Yves Prescott, had emerged as the victor. He had become the youngest, most capable, and most feared leader of the Prescott Group. But in the process, he had never known the warmth of real family affection.
Hearing Zane's words moved him deeply. He lifted the boy onto his lap and said with great solemnity, "In the future, no matter how many children your mother and I have, my fortune will be divided equally among all of you. Then, we will choose the most capable among you to lead the Prescott Group. If you are the strongest, Zane, then you will have that responsibility. But you must promise to always love and protect your younger siblings. Can you do that?"
Zane nodded enthusiastically. "Of course!"
