"And how, Miss Shepherd, did someone like *you* get on a prestigious cruise like this?" Winona retorted, her voice calm.
Felicity gave a cool, dismissive smile. "My fiancé's family is the most prominent in Greenwood City. I was named one of the city's outstanding young professionals this year. The senior living project I designed has been praised city-wide and will soon benefit the elderly all over the world. Do you think I'm not qualified to be here?"
"So, you're flaunting your fiancé's family status and your own accomplishments?" Winona countered. "What does any of that have to do with you being on this cruise?"
Felicity was momentarily speechless. "You…"
Winona drained her glass in one go, her eyes sweeping over Felicity with a look of utter indifference. "Miss Shepherd, that prominent family of your fiancé's? They belong to the ex-husband I discarded. So why are you bothering to show off something I threw away? As for your project, are you sure—"
"Julian is not a ‘thing'! He's a person!" Felicity interrupted, seizing the moral high ground. "You insult your ex-husband like that and think you're so noble?"
"Oh, so you also know your fiancé is not a good person?" Winona shot back with a radiant smile.
Felicity and Julian were stunned into silence.
"You asked how I was qualified to be here. Am I missing an arm? A leg? How is it that you are qualified, but I am not? Or is it that your fiancé is a person of substance, but you are not?"
"You… How dare you curse at me in public!" Felicity sputtered.
"Which part of that was a curse?"
Felicity couldn't answer.
Inside, the sounds of laughter and chatter filled the air. She saw Winona's grandmother and her deaf son, who wore a cochlear implant, playing together. The sight of the old woman and the young boy running around seemed utterly out of place in such an elegant setting.
"Great-Grandma, let's go over there! They have yummy snacks," Zane said, pulling his great-grandmother by the hand. As the old woman reached for a treat for Zane, a voice called out from behind her.
"Helga, that dessert is cold and sweet. It's not good for someone your age. You should have something light and warm. What would you like? I'll get it for you."
The grandmother turned to see Old Mr. Shepherd hovering behind her like a lost puppy. She was so disgusted she almost spat on the floor. But this was a high-class event, so she swallowed her revulsion and hissed, "You old wretch, what are you following me for? Get lost! You're making me sick."
"I just wanted to let you know that June and I are separated now. City Hall is closed for the holiday, but the day they reopen, I'm filing for divorce."
