"I'm sorry, Miss Perkins. I… I met someone. He's in Riverbend City, and I want…" Sue trailed off.
"Alright… If things don't work out in Riverbend City, will you come back?" Winona asked.
"Of course, Miss Perkins."
Sue stood up. "Goodbye, Miss Perkins."
"Goodbye."
The moment Sue left the café, tears streamed down her face. As a woman and a mother herself, she had witnessed a child's suffering and felt utterly powerless. The Nicholson family was too powerful; she had to protect herself.
The blame for all of this lay with that despicable father. How could he be so cruel as to systematically teach his own child to hate her mother, all for his own selfish desires?
Julian had succeeded.
But the price was the soul of a five-year-old child.
He deserved to burn for what he had done.
Sue wept as she left Greenwood City for good.
That afternoon, Julian never showed up.
He had been on his way to see Winona when he received another urgent call from the technician at the construction site. There was a major problem with the project. As a non-expert, Julian couldn't solve it; it was an issue for Felicity.
He called her at the hospital, where she was monitoring Mr. Frank's condition. After two days, Frank was recovering well with no signs of rejection. Most of the tubes had been removed, and if all went well, he would be out of the ICU in a few days.
Felicity was puzzled by Julian's call. Her designs were flawless, so how could there be a large-scale problem with the construction?
She rushed from the hospital to the site. After one look around, she realized with a sinking heart that the problem was beyond her ability to fix.
This time, Julian didn't bother calling. He drove straight to Winona's house.
Mia answered the door, glaring at him. "What are you doing here?"
"Where's Winona? I need to talk to her."
"She's away on a business trip," Mia snapped.
"Where did she go?" Julian pressed. What kind of business could she have during the holidays?
Mia didn't answer. She just slammed the door in his face.
Meanwhile, in the early morning light of Italy, Winona stood before the grave of Ms. Irene Chase in the cemetery of the San Michele monastery, just outside Venice.
"Is that… Miss Shepherd?" a strange voice asked from behind her.
