No matter how hardened Winona's heart had become, she couldn't help but be moved. Her voice choked with emotion as she looked past her ex-husband and his new bride, her eyes only for the man kneeling before her.
"Yves," she whispered, "you know I don't care about a grand wedding or how much money you have. I've lived through hardship; I can do it again. My only wish is…"
"Your only wish is to have a family," Yves finished for her, his voice soft and certain. "A family that loves and supports each other, without any schemes or calculations. A family where someone adores you, where your in-laws love you like their own daughter. The family you've always dreamed of has loving parents and grandparents, a devoted husband, and lots of children. It doesn't matter if that family is poor. That's your lifelong dream, isn't it, Winona?"
Like a devout worshipper, Yves spoke the words that captured the deepest, most buried longings of her heart.
Tears streamed down her face as she nodded like a child. "Yes…"
"Winona, you already have your grandmother and your sister. As for parents who will love you like a daughter, I can promise you my mother will. And as for children, you can have as many as you want. Whatever you want, it's yours. Is that okay?"
She nodded frantically through her tears. "Yes… yes…"
Many in the audience were moved to tears as well.
"I heard that in her six years with the Nicholson family, Mr. Nicholson never once treated her kindly."
"He didn't even give her an allowance. She was their unpaid maid for six years."
"She's a wonderful woman. So much more beautiful than Felicity."
"The Nicholsons deserve this. They treated Winona so horribly, and now they're worshipping Felicity, only to find out she comes with two pieces of baggage. The new bride fed them a mouthful of crap, and they have to pretend it's the most delicious thing they've ever tasted."
"Serves them right!"
"This couple, the ones getting engaged now, they're the real deal."
"Say yes, girl!"
"You're right, my fiancée," Yves said with a grin. "My work here is done."
With his arm around Winona, he descended from the stage with an air of elegant triumph, just as Felicity's twins made their grand entrance.
The children were, as Felicity had said, exceptionally beautiful and stylish. They were also completely unfazed by the massive crowd. It was their first time at such an event—their own mother's wedding to another man—but they showed no signs of shyness. They chattered away next to Felicity as if no one else existed.
"Mommy, you're so beautiful," the little boy said. "You're the prettiest bride in the world."
"Mommy, I want to be as pretty as you when I grow up," the little girl added.
Felicity put an arm around each of them and gestured toward Julian. "Say hello to Daddy," she instructed. "Daddy has gifts for you."
"Are they big gifts?" the little girl asked.
