Steven arched a brow, irritation tightening his chiseled features. “Lucie, we need to have a real conversation.”

He stepped closer, and the air between them grew thick with pressure.

Instinctively, Lucie retreated, putting two steps of space between them. “There’s nothing to talk about. If you have something to say, save it for the courtroom.”

He advanced anyway, looming over her. “Do you really have to make it come to this?”

He was so tall, just being near him felt like standing under a crushing weight.

“Let go of me. Don’t touch me!” she snapped.

Steven ignored her, his arm snaking around her waist. “What do you want, Lucie? What are you really after?”

“Divorce. There’s nothing else to say.” She shoved at his chest, desperate to break free.

But in the narrow space between the desk and the bookshelf, he boxed her in, leaving her nowhere to escape.

He leaned down, his breath hot against her hair. “All this over one tiny incident? Or is there something else?”

Lucie glared up at him, fury burning in her eyes. “You think this is nothing?”

“Isn’t it?” His voice was cold. “You’re always picking fights about Shannon. Always jealous, always blowing things out of proportion...”

“Enough.” She cut him off, voice sharp. “Tell me the truth. Was it ever just friendship with Shannon? Did you two ever date?”

His gaze flickered. He didn’t answer.

“You were her first love, weren’t you? You slept with her, didn’t you? Tell me the truth.”

A shadow crossed his handsome face, frustration and heaviness mingled in his eyes. “Lucie, there’s no point digging up the past. Even if something happened between Shannon and me, it’s over. Since marrying you, I’ve only seen her as a sister, and that’s all she’ll ever be to me.”

Shannon had adored him since childhood, clung to him, needed him.
