The Day I Walked Away My Empire Began novel Chapter 5

Sometimes, emergency restoration meant she had to descend into ancient tombs herself. That’s why she always carried the faint scent of a special disinfectant.

But it was never unpleasant.

And there was no way a three-year-old would come up with a phrase like “smells like dead people” unless someone had taught him.

“Cody, who taught you to say that?”

Today, she was putting her foot down. No more letting things slide.

“You are mean! Let me go! I hate you!”

Smack! Smack!

Two sharp slaps echoed in the room.

Lucie’s patience snapped. She meted out a real lesson. “Today, I’m going to teach you what respect looks like. You can’t talk to me like that.”

She turned to the housekeeper. “Madison, call every nanny and tutor. Tell them they’re all fired. Every last one.”

Cody burst into tears, wailing for the staff. “No! Let me go! Marian, help!”

Marian and two nannies rushed over, panic in their eyes. “Ma’am, the young master is delicate! You can’t hit him like that!”

Marian pulled Cody behind her, her voice thick with disdain. “Mrs. Heath, you might have given birth to him, but that doesn’t mean you can just hit him whenever you want! If the old lady finds out, she’ll be furious.”

Marian had nursed Steven from infancy; she was also Shannon’s mother.

Because she’d raised Steven, her standing in the Heath household far surpassed that of any other servant.

After Cody was born, Marian practically took over his care, overseeing the staff more than caring for Cody herself.

Lucie’s anger flared white-hot. “He’s my son. I don’t need a servant telling me how to raise him.”
