“Let go of me!” Lucie’s voice shook with panic as she tried to break free from his grip.
Steven’s arm locked around her waist, unyielding. He practically carried her to his car and shoved her into the back seat, pressing her down against the leather. His hands gripped her shoulders, giving her no chance to escape.
Her heart thudded painfully in her chest. She’d never seen Steven like this before—so cold, so frightening. “Steven, what are you doing?”
His jaw was clenched tight, his face dark with anger. “No, Lucie. That’s what I should be asking you. What exactly do you think you’re doing?”
She shoved at his wrists, furious. “Let me go. If you have something to say, say it. Just don’t touch me!” But his hands wouldn’t budge, no matter how hard she pushed.
“Are you serious this time, Lucie?” His eyes burned with anger, his voice low and rough. He looked seconds away from losing it completely. He wanted to lash out, to make her pay, but he remembered her recent miscarriage. He couldn’t bring himself to actually hurt her.
Lucie’s thoughts were a mess. “Steven, there’s nothing left between us. I think the best thing is to just end this. Maybe we’ll both be better off.”
He laughed, but there was nothing warm in it. “A clean break? Really?” Control was his thing; he’d never let anyone make decisions for him. No one could force him into anything he didn’t want.
“You’re hurting me,” she said, her voice small.
