The Day I Walked Away My Empire Began novel Chapter 65

Lucie held his gaze, her eyes steady and unflinching.

"Steven, you know I can't stand being lied to. Just tell me the truth—there's nothing wrong with your health, is there?"

She'd had doubts for a while now. Back when they got married, he'd claimed his drinking had messed up his body. He even said he was infertile. But their nights together were more than just normal. Sometimes two or three times a day. If he was really sick, could he keep up with that? And then last month, she got pregnant. That just sealed it.

Steven's eyes flickered with something she couldn’t quite read before he slipped on his usual innocent act.

"I already told you, babe. I really did have a problem before, but I've been taking medicine. It worked. I’m fine now."

Lucie raised an eyebrow. "You? Taking medicine? Funny, I never saw you take anything."

He closed the distance between them, slipping his arms around her waist. "Babe, guys don’t like talking about stuff like that. Even if I was on medication, I wouldn’t have said anything."

Lucie wasn’t buying it. He could lie without even blinking.

"And what about Cody..."

Steven gently cupped her face, leaning in to brush his lips against hers.

"Sweetheart, stop overthinking. Cody’s your child—you gave birth to him. Of course he’s yours. And I’m his father. Why would I ever hurt my own kid?"

He flashed that confident, almost cocky smile.

"Give it a little time, babe. You’ll forgive me soon. And if you don’t, we’ll just keep trying... as many times as it takes."

He always pulled the same trick, and it always worked. Like a hungry wolf cornering a helpless rabbit—she never had a chance.

Five minutes later, Lucie was breathless, her resistance slipping away. Right when she was about to give in completely, Steven’s phone started buzzing on the nightstand. He scowled, clearly annoyed, but the call wouldn’t stop. This was his private phone, the one only his closest circle knew about.

"Hold on, babe, let me grab this," he muttered, pulling away. He reached for his phone, answering with a lazy, slightly irritated, "Yeah?"
