The moment he got off the plane, Steven’s phone buzzed.
His heart skipped a beat. He fumbled for his phone, breath held as he checked the caller ID—only to see Shannon’s name flash across the screen. He hesitated, disappointment tightening in his chest, then picked up. “Yeah?”
Shannon’s voice came through, thick with guilt and worry. “Steven, are you back in New Amberton?”
“I am.”
“Did you… did you find Lucie? Is she still mad at you?”
Steven let out a frustrated sigh. “I haven’t found her yet.”
On the other end, Shannon’s voice wavered between jealousy and a fake attempt at comfort. “Don’t stress too much, okay? Lucie’s an adult. She probably just needed some time away, maybe took a trip to clear her head. She’ll come back when she’s ready.”
Steven really wasn’t in the mood for this. “Is there something else? If not, I’m hanging up.”
“Wait! Mrs. Heath invited me over for dinner at the old house this afternoon. You should come too.”
“I’m busy.”
Shannon’s tone turned pleading. “Please, Steven? Mrs. Heath and Cody really miss you. You can’t just ignore them because of what’s happening with Lucie. Besides, they’re leaving for Canada next week.”
Steven pinched the bridge of his nose, tension building. “...Fine. I’ll come by for dinner.”
Shannon’s mood instantly lifted. “Great! See you tonight.”
As soon as she ended the call, her mind started spinning. She couldn’t help the little thrill that ran through her.
“Oh… okay.”
In the dining room, the table was crowded with beautifully plated dishes. Steven walked in just as Shannon appeared from the kitchen, apron tied around her waist and a smudge of flour on her temple that made her look sweet and innocent.
“Steven, you made it! I cooked few simple dishes tonight.”
Miranda beamed at him. “Shannon was amazing today. She didn’t let the staff help at all. Did everything herself. She’s really turning into a great homemaker. Lucie can’t even make an egg.”
Shannon flashed a shy, hopeful smile. “I just hope you and Mrs. Heath like it.”
Then she hurried over and ladled a big bowl of chicken soup for Steven, placing it in front of him. The soup was already loaded with expensive herbs, but she’d quietly stirred in a few drops of that blue liquid.
