The Day I Walked Away My Empire Began novel Chapter 87

Mick translated for the foreign guests, who nodded along, clearly intrigued. The experts from home were just as absorbed, studying the relics and sharing quiet thoughts with each other.

Everyone was focused on the exhibits—everyone except Elio.

He trailed at the end of the group, goofing off and striking over-the-top poses, all for Lucie’s attention. She could only stare at him, speechless. Seriously, how did he even get into such a formal event?

Once the tour of Hall Two wrapped up, Lucie led everyone to Hall Three.

“Let’s head to Hall Three now. This hall highlights the elegance of 15th Century. Our first exhibit is Lady Eleanor’s Crown, which was discovered in 1978.”

Lucie was fully in her element, explaining with confidence while the guests listened closely. Meanwhile, Elio leaned against a glass case, watching her with a cocky grin. Every time she glanced his way, he’d send her a heart sign, blow a kiss, or pull some ridiculous face.

Lucie was so distracted she nearly lost her place more than once. Thank goodness Mick kept her on track with a well-timed cue whenever she faltered.

After forty-five minutes, the group had finished touring the first three halls. They were given a twenty-minute break and guided to a lounge, where the museum had set out coffee and delicate pastries inspired by royal recipes.

Lucie didn’t join them. She quickly pulled out her script and found a quiet spot to review her notes. She’d been prepared for everything—except Elio. Now her mind felt scrambled, and she didn’t trust herself not to forget a key detail. Better to go over everything one more time.

She was completely absorbed in her notes when Elio wandered over, watching her with a steady gaze. Her dress hugged her figure perfectly, her slender wrists and flawless features glowing under the soft lights. She looked even more stunning than he remembered—more confident, more captivating than back in their school days.

Seeing how upset she was only seemed to amuse Elio more. “Regretting it yet? You picked that guy, and look how that worked out. Bet you didn’t see that coming.”

He pressed on. “You only chose him to get back at me, right? What did you even see in him? I warned you, older guys are all schemers. They know how to play the game—and look, now you’re paying for it.”

Lucie’s expression went ice cold. “Just spit it out, Elio. What do you actually want?”

He looked right at her, a playful challenge in his eyes. “I’m just saying I’m better looking, I’m younger, I’m richer. Picking him over me was the dumbest thing you ever did.”

Lucie let out a dry laugh. “So you’re just here to rub it in, huh?”
