“Let me go.”
Steven’s grip tightened on Lucie’s arm, but before he could pull her away, Elio stepped in, grabbing Steven’s wrist. “Didn’t you hear her?” Elio said, voice sharp and mocking. “She doesn’t want to go with you. Let her go.”
With a hard shove, Elio pushed Steven aside and moved in front of Lucie, shielding her.
Steven steadied himself, eyes narrowing as he glared at Elio. “Mr. Pitts, you’re seriously overstepping. She’s my wife. This has nothing to do with you.”
Elio just rolled his eyes and smirked. “You know, I’ve always had a habit of sticking my nose where it doesn’t belong. Today’s no exception.”
Steven’s jaw clenched, anger flaring in his chest. He wanted to tear Elio apart, right here and now. But he knew better. Elio’s family basically ran Elmridge. Money could only get Steven so far. Real power was something else entirely.
He took a slow breath and forced a cold smile. “So, you’re the one stirring up trouble behind my back, aren’t you?”
Elio raised an eyebrow, acting clueless. “Trouble? Me? I think you’re imagining things. If you didn’t want people to find out, maybe you shouldn’t have done it in the first place. Don’t you agree?”
“So it really is you, isn’t it?” Steven growled. The last few days had been a nightmare, with scandal after scandal popping up online. Now it all made sense. Elio was behind it.
Elio shrugged, unbothered. “Maybe it is, maybe it’s not. But why would I have to report to you? Go back to New Amberton, Steven. You’re not taking Lucie anywhere today.”
She turned and walked toward the elevators, not looking back. She wasn’t going back to New Amberton tonight. All she wanted was to get to her hotel room and away from all this drama.
Steven rushed after her, his voice softer now. “Lucie, wait. I came here to talk about the divorce.”
He pulled a folded document from his pocket and held it out to her.
“If this is what you really want, I’ll respect it. I’ve already signed the divorce papers. If there’s anything you want to add, just let me know.”
Lucie stopped in her tracks, staring at the papers in shock. Steven’s signature was right there, clear as day. For a moment, she couldn’t believe it was real.
