Chapter 11
Alexander pressed his lips tightly together. What had he done?
That night, Vivienne had said she didn’t like anything in the apartment.
So the next day, he called Evelyn back and, in front of her, threw all of her things out.
Among those things, could there have been a note like this? Could there also have been a trace of
her affection hidden inside?
Suddenly, Alexander felt as if his chest had been struck by a heavy blow, his breath caught in his
throat.
He turned around and walked outside, the rain falling heavily.
Standing under the eaves, Alexander called Vivienne.
Vivienne’s voice sounded surprised, “Alexander, did you finally agree? I knew it…”
Alexander coldly interrupted her, “What did you do that night in the apartment?”
Vivienne was stunned. “I didn’t do anything. I was really tired that night and went to bed early.”
“Vivienne!” Alexander’s voice turned icy. “That night, what did you see in Evelyn’s room?”
Vivienne fell silent for a moment. “Now that you’re asking me like this, do I really need to say? Don’t you already know? I only spoke the truth. If that woman were just gold–digging, that’d be fine, but she actually dares to like you? She’s like a toad trying to eat a swan’s meat. I wanted her to see clearly what she is. What’s wrong with that?”
Alexander’s voice trembled with disbelief. “How could you be like this?”
“Isn’t it because of you and your brother? One cheated, the other wouldn’t help me. Hiding behind his little lover in London, and when I needed support, I had no one. I just wanted to get rid of her and have your attention focused on me. What’s wrong with that?”
Vivienne gritted her teeth and shouted, “And besides, wasn’t it you who threw away her things?”
Alexander froze.
Yes, it was him who had thrown her things away, who had let Evelyn slip away.

He weakly ended the call and stared out at the pitch–black night.
There were no stars, no wind. The raindrops fell straight to the ground, soaking into him.
No Evelyn.
The world around him seemed empty and dark.
It felt as though he could no longer find her.
Evelyn seemed to have disappeared into the night, never to return.
A sharp pain, a sense of unfamiliar fear, slowly spread through Alexander’s bones.
He opened his phone, and the last message from Evelyn was still on the screen.
“Waiting for you to come back.”
Alexander stared at the message. His back stiffened, and after a long pause, he typed a reply.
“I’m back.”
“Evelyn, I’m back.”
No response. The phone remained silent, no reply.
The heavy rain continued to pour down. The assistant hurriedly brought an umbrella to him. “Mr.
Whitmore…”
He couldn’t finish his sentence.
He saw Alexander standing silently in the rain, the raindrops wetting his hair. Tears at the corners of his eyes left streaks on his face.
The rain in the U.K. seemed endless.
Three years later.
New York City, Fourth Aerospace Research Institute.
I was packing up my things. After the project ended, the first call I made was to Lily.
Lily teased, “It’s been three years, and now you finally call me? I thought you forgot about me!”

I placed all the awards into my suitcase. The project had been a complete success, Though I wasn’t the primary contributor, during the course of it, I published several papers and received
numerous awards throughout it. I had gained so much.
The first person I wanted to share this with was my only friend, Lily Monroe.
“When are you coming back to the U.S.? We should meet and catch up,”
Lily replied, “I’m still in the U.K., busy with my master’s thesis. You should come to the U.K. and find me.”
I paused while closing the suitcase. “I probably won’t be going to the U.K. anymore.”
After all, there was someone there I shouldn’t see again.
Lily understood my hesitation. “If you really don’t want to see him, you should come to the U.K.
even more.”
“After all, he returned to New York City three years ago.‘
