My face went pale in an instant, and I froze, staring at Lucas. The pounding in my ears grew deafening.

How could this… How could I let Lucas hear this?

I slowly took a step back. In Lucas’s increasingly somber gaze, I felt like I had nowhere to hide. It felt as though every sense I had drained away in that moment, and even when Alexander held my hand, I couldn’t feel it.

I just kept staring at Lucas, hoping his eyes wouldn’t show a trace of contempt or disgust.

After my mother left, taking the elevator down in a rush, Lucas walked out of the elevator and

toward me, step by step.

“I heard everything you said just now.”

I froze, unable to speak. Lucas lowered his head, his gaze heavy as he looked at Alexander holding

my hand.

“I need to speak with you privately.”

The pounding in my ears grew louder. I pulled my hand away from Alexander’s.

“Leave.”

Alexander bit his lip, as if he wanted to say something, but when he saw my pale face and my determination, he slowly turned and walked out.

The door slammed shut with a loud bang.

Lucas looked at the half–eaten cake on the table and sat on the couch.

“Is it because you didn’t want me to see him that you lied to me?”

I bit my lip, at a loss for words. “I’m sorry.”

Lucas looked at me. He reached for my hand, sitting next to me on the couch, gently prying open my tightly clenched fingers, observing the red imprints left by my nails. “Why him?”

I stayed silent.

Lucas asked, “Did he give you a lot?”

I closed my eyes. “Yes.”

“Did you like him those three years?”

I stayed silent for a moment. “…Yes.”

“Did he like you?”

“No.”

“You didn’t dare tell me this, is that it?”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes tightly. “I’m sorry.”

I couldn’t look at Lucas anymore. What expression would be on his face? Disgust? Contempt? Or

both?

Would he leave immediately? Would he break up with me right away? Or would thinking about the memories we shared together make him sick?

I could understand all of it.

At that moment, I could accept any reaction from Lucas.

The sofa beside me suddenly shifted. Lucas stood up. Was he leaving?

My heart sank, and I opened my eyes, reaching for his hand, but Lucas simply walked over to the table. He cleaned the dish with the cake on it, rinsed it, and placed it in the cupboard.

Then he walked into my bedroom and locked the door.

There was still the guest room, but I just sat on the couch in a daze, my mind a mess. I couldn’t

understand what Lucas was doing.

I stayed like that until the next morning. Lucas finally opened the door, as if nothing had happened the day before.

“Go wash your face, put on some makeup.”

Lucas glanced at me for a moment, took my hand, and led me to the car, then pulled out two IDs.

One was mine, the other his.

My heart skipped a beat. An unbelievable thought flashed through my mind, and I froze.

“Where are we going?”

Lucas gave a small smile and reached out to hold my hand.

Through the tears that blurred my vision, I heard Lucas say.

“We’re going to get married.”
